Trainee, Corporate Fleet Operations Management

Waste Management, Inc. (WM)•Windsor, CT

About The Position

The Waste Management Fleet Operational Management Trainee (FOMT) program is a 12-month course designed to develop candidates for fleet manager roles. Fleet Managers oversee primary and secondary equipment and focus on market-based profitability through effective management of fleet and maintenance activities, cost control, personnel development, training, and safety. Successful trainees must be willing to relocate within an assigned geographic area. The program includes primarily field-based on-the-job training, with some classroom training, and requires 10–14 months of travel during the training period. WM covers travel costs and offers relocation assistance. The training location may differ from the permanent placement location. The role combines office work with frequent field assignments and exposure to weather and other non-office conditions. Fieldwork may require ascending and descending from collection and support equipment and riding for many consecutive hours. Trainees may periodically work nontraditional schedules, including 12-hour workdays, some weekends, and early starts. The program strongly prefers candidates who can relocate throughout the United States and Canada, either for the program or a later permanent operations role. Some air and car travel may be required. The targeted start date is March 2027. The trainee completes the FOMT curriculum and develops practical knowledge of fleet management, WM fleet and business applications, equipment operation and maintenance, personnel management, financial and forecasting processes, scalehouse operations, and safety practices. Learning is action- and experience-based and may include special projects and interim management assignments.
