About The Position

Works under general supervision operating overhead intercom systems. Answers and routes incoming calls to the correct department, patient room, or staff member; initiates urgent medical emergency alerts and codes to dispatch appropriate response teams; coordinates patient telephone service; and performs clerical duties.

Requirements

Above-average typing skills.
Good communication skills and sound judgment.
High school education or equivalent.
Ability to tactfully and courteously deal with a wide variety of people, from physicians to the general public; normally acquired after three months of direct personal contact.
Two weeks of on-the-job training before assuming full responsibilities.

Previous PBX switchboard experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Processes calls received by the switchboard and assists with outgoing calls as necessary.
Reports malfunctioning telephone equipment to appropriate IS personnel.
Performs voice, digital, pocket, and walkie-talkie paging, and maintains current pocket-pager assignments.
Responds to alarms and codes by paging and/or calling appropriate personnel.
Monitors the weather radio when necessary.
Maintains an updated census listing during computer downtime by noting admissions, releases, transfers, and deaths.
Completes the Provisional Report of Death and Burial Transit Permit for all deaths.
Maintains current user contact information in the Extend system.
Participates in training new employees.
Maintains current knowledge of communication procedural changes.
Maintains a positive and caring attitude toward patients and professional, caring phone etiquette.
Communicates information to patients, family, and visitors in an understandable way to help them meet their health care needs.
