About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring part-time substitute teachers in Houston, Texas, for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers work in K–12 schools, covering teaching assignments and helping students see what is possible. They may also be asked to support lunch and recess supervision, monitor hallways, tutor students, and proctor during testing season. Teachers choose their own schedule and can work up to five days per week, selecting assignments they are excited about. The role offers a path to potential permanent positions at high-performing K–12 schools. Kokua provides support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience working with children in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
• At least 48 college credit hours completed.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to step in where needed, including supervision, tutoring, and testing support.
• Pass state and federal background checks; the costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Believe every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Responsibilities

• Cover teaching assignments and lesson plans in K–12 classrooms.
• Manage a classroom of students.
• Step in where needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
