About The Position

The library is hiring two substitutes who work across all three library branches. Bookmobile shifts may occasionally be offered. Shifts are on demand between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Substitutes are expected to work at least 200 hours per year, with additional hours available. A bilingual pay incentive of $1 per hour is available. Substitutes perform varied clerical work involving the issuing and receiving of library books, periodicals, and other materials. They assist patrons with library and holds services, gather data for statistical reports, shelve items, and assist with overdue fines. The role requires understanding how the library is organized so patrons can be helped in finding items. Substitutes are primarily scheduled to cover the circulation desk, handling check-outs and check-ins, collecting fines, gathering statistics, and directing patrons to more advanced services such as readers’ advisory, new library cards, and program information. The position also involves carrying and shelving books and other materials, and requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Substitutes greet visitors, provide customer service consistent with library guidelines, patron privacy, and library laws, develop knowledge of the collection and its organization, call for appropriate support when needed, and understand basic library services such as printing, copying, and faxing, including associated charges. They also develop working knowledge of the organization and care of library materials and of library services and programs.
