About The Position

Healthie is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the end-to-end architecture and delivery of a new billing platform within its production Ruby on Rails monolith. The role owns the platform’s data models, backend services, GraphQL APIs, and React/TypeScript experiences, while setting technical direction and making key implementation decisions. The system supports billing workflows used by healthcare providers and must coexist safely with Healthie’s current platform. The engineer will collaborate closely with Product and Design to translate complex billing and payer requirements into shippable work, and will guide the team through design reviews, mentorship, testing, observability, auditability, and safe rollouts. This is a full-time, hybrid role based in Healthie’s NYC office. U.S. work authorization is required; Healthie does not provide sponsorship. Compensation is a base salary of $240,000–$280,000, plus equity, an annual bonus, and benefits. The role includes training and conformance to security and compliance expectations, including HIPAA-related requirements.

Requirements

At least 8 years of experience building and shipping production systems across the full stack.
Strong expertise in Ruby, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.
Experience designing backend services, APIs, and data models for complex, high-scale applications.
Ability to design scalable architectures and solve technical problems spanning services, data layers, and user experiences.
Commitment to reliable, correct financial workflows, maintainable code, thoughtful testing, and observability.
Ability to lead technical initiatives, guide architecture decisions, conduct design reviews, and mentor engineers.
Ability to collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate complex requirements into well-designed systems and intuitive user experiences.
Interest in improving healthcare through technology and enabling providers to deliver better care while operating sustainable practices.

Responsibilities

Lead design and delivery of the new billing platform, from architecture through launch.
Make and document key technical decisions about data modeling, payment flows, reconciliation, and coexistence with the current system.
Build across the stack using Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, React, and TypeScript.
Establish standards for correctness in financial workflows, including testing, observability, auditability, and safe rollouts.
Run design reviews and mentor engineers on the team.
Partner with Product and Design to turn complex billing and payer requirements into clear, shippable scope.
Guide architectural decisions and technical initiatives across complex engineering challenges.
