Staff Software Engineer - Billing Platform

Snowflake•Menlo Park, CA
•$236,000 - $339,200

About The Position

The Staff Software Engineer on Snowflake’s Billing & Payments Platform team builds and operates central systems for customer resource consumption, revenue processing, invoicing, and reporting. These systems meter usage across cloud providers and regions, reconcile that usage into auditable bills, and support changing pricing models—including products such as Cortex AI, Snowflake Intelligence, and other AI offerings. The role emphasizes accuracy, auditability, reliability, and processing usage as it happens. The team builds these systems using Snowflake’s own product, and its architectures also serve as reference patterns for customers building on Snowflake. This is a deeply cross-functional staff-level role partnering with Product, Finance, Legal, Growth, Go-to-Market Systems, Snowsight, Cortex AI, Trust, and product engineering teams. The engineer drives multi-team initiatives from ambiguous business problems through design, launch, and operation, sets technical approaches for other engineers, and may own bounded projects end-to-end. They develop expertise in a primary billing domain while influencing adjacent systems, take responsibility for reliability and correctness, participate in on-call, and mentor senior engineers. The position also involves using AI as a builder’s tool in design, coding, debugging, and incident response.

Requirements

  • Significant experience building and operating large-scale production distributed systems, typically 10+ years or equivalent impact.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency, fault tolerance, idempotency, exactly-once processing, queueing, and stream and batch pipelines.
  • Strong database and data modeling fundamentals, including SQL, schema design, performance tuning, and understanding operational realities of large-scale data systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more of Java, Scala, Python, or Go.
  • Experience applying practices for operable systems at scale, including testing, observability, CI/CD, and incremental rollout.
  • Track record of driving outcomes across teams, framing problems amid stakeholder disagreement, writing designs, making tradeoffs, and delivering systems to production.
  • Depth in at least one billing-adjacent domain, such as metering, rating, invoicing, contracts, payments, revenue, or financial reporting, with sufficient range to debug and influence adjacent systems.
  • Hands-on use of AI as a builder’s tool in design, coding, debugging, and incident response; prior use of Cortex Code or Snowflake Intelligence is not required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with non-engineering partners, including explaining pricing or contract changes in ways Finance can audit and engineering can implement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in billing, payments, metering, revenue, or financial systems at a SaaS or cloud company.
  • Experience with fraud detection, abuse mitigation, or trust and safety systems in a usage-based product.
  • Experience designing or evolving pricing models for AI/ML products, including inference, fine-tuning, and agentic workloads.
  • Experience building on Snowflake or comparable cloud data platforms, including Snowpark, Streams and Tasks, Iceberg, Streamlit, or Cortex.
  • Contributions to internal AI developer-productivity tooling, agentic skills, or similar coding-agent workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Drive multi-team initiatives from ambiguous business problems through design, launch, and operation, and set technical approaches for other engineers.
  • Own bounded projects end-to-end when appropriate.
  • Build systems that meter, rate, and invoice usage across Snowflake services, reconciling usage collected across clouds and regions into auditable bills.
  • Shape how Snowflake meters, prices, and bills AI products, including token-based inference, agent workflows, and AI-native subscriptions.
  • Develop expertise in a primary billing domain—such as metering, rating, invoicing, contracts, payments, threshold billing, fraud, or reporting—and influence adjacent systems.
  • Own the reliability and correctness of systems built; participate in on-call, debug across unfamiliar areas, and drive systemic improvements to monitoring, alerts, and quality.
  • Mentor senior engineers, review designs, and improve testing and rollout practices.
  • Partner with Product, Finance, GTM Systems, Growth, Trust, and Legal; write designs that both engineering and Finance can execute.
  • Use AI tools in design, coding, debugging, and incident response.
  • Follow Snowflake confidentiality and security standards and protect customer information.
