About The Position

Healthie is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to serve as technical lead for rebuilding its billing platform. The role owns the end-to-end architecture of a new billing system, including data models, backend services, GraphQL APIs, and React/TypeScript user experiences. This is a greenfield-scale build within a production Ruby on Rails monolith relied on by more than 40,000 providers. The engineer will set technical direction, make and document key implementation decisions, and collaborate closely with Product and Design. The position reports to the Director of Engineering / CTO and is part of a brand-new team. It is full-time and hybrid within Healthie’s NYC office. U.S. work authorization is required; Healthie does not provide sponsorship. The base salary is $240,000–$280,000, plus equity, annual bonus, and benefits. The role also entails training and conformance to Healthie’s security and compliance expectations.

Requirements

At least 8 years of experience building and shipping production systems across the full stack.
Strong expertise in modern web technologies, including Ruby, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.
Experience designing backend services, APIs, and data models for complex, high-scale applications.
Ability to design scalable architectures and solve complex technical problems across services, data layers, and user experiences.
Commitment to reliability and correctness, particularly for financial workflows, with clean, maintainable code and thoughtful testing and observability.
Ability to lead technical initiatives, guide architectural decisions, and help teams navigate complex engineering challenges.
Experience raising engineering quality through design reviews, mentorship, and collaboration.
Ability to partner with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate complex requirements into well-designed systems and intuitive user experiences.
Interest in improving healthcare through technology and building infrastructure that enables providers to deliver better care while running sustainable practices.

Responsibilities

Lead the design and delivery of the new billing platform, from architecture through launch.
Make and document key technical decisions about data modeling, payment flows, reconciliation, and coexistence with the current system.
Build across the stack using Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, React, and TypeScript.
Establish standards for correctness in financial workflows, including testing, observability, auditability, and safe rollouts.
Run design reviews and mentor engineers on the team.
Partner with Product and Design to turn complex billing and payer requirements into clear, shippable scope.
Set technical direction and make decisions about what to build and how.
