Staff Product Operations Manager

Tailscale

About The Position

Tailscale is seeking an experienced Staff Product Operations Manager to own how its Product organization operates. The role assesses how Product plans, launches, learns from customers, and measures results; identifies important operational gaps; and designs systems to address them. As a strategic contributor, the manager partners with Product leadership and shapes connections between Product, go-to-market (GTM), Support, Data, and company planning. This is an autonomous role in an early-stage, fully remote company, requiring the ability to turn broad goals into strategies, choose priorities, and build alignment across the organization. The position reports to the Manager, Program Management. The role works within the Program Management team and owns operating practices across roadmap health, product launches, documentation and onboarding, feature requests, customer insights, operating rhythms, and product data. Success means Product leadership relies on product operations as a strategic partner, customer insights visibly inform the roadmap, and the operating model scales as Tailscale adds products and teams.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in product operations, program management, or business operations, including designing an organization’s operating model.
  • Track record of independently starting high-impact operations initiatives.
  • Experience building customer insight systems that influence product prioritization.
  • Experience setting launch frameworks and readiness standards across Product and GTM.
  • Experience defining product metrics and data strategy with data teams.
  • Systems thinking and ability to understand how Product processes affect GTM, Support, and company planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and build alignment across organizations.
  • Experience mentoring others and raising the quality of a team’s work.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication in an asynchronous, remote-first environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy and standards for roadmap health, including definitions and reporting for initiative and epic dates and health.
  • Evolve the Product organization’s continuous planning cadence and connect it to company planning.
  • Own the external roadmap and how it is communicated to customers and the field.
  • Define launch frameworks and readiness standards across Product, Product Marketing (PMM), Sales, and Support.
  • Partner with PMM, Sales, and Support leaders to make launch readiness consistent and measurable.
  • Set standards for Product organization documentation structure and maintenance.
  • Design the Product team’s onboarding program as the organization grows.
  • Design the end-to-end feature request system, from intake in Jira through its connection to roadmap decisions.
  • Give Product leadership visibility into customer demand and how it is reflected in the roadmap.
  • Own a customer insight strategy combining closed-lost data, feature requests, QBRs, and feedback from Discord, Reddit, and GitHub to inform prioritization.
  • Own and evolve the Product organization’s operating model, including the customer QBR process for EPD and the internal MBR.
  • Define the Product organization’s metrics and data strategy in partnership with Data, ensuring dashboards scale with new products and features.
  • Independently identify gaps in Product operations, make the case to leadership, and drive solutions.
  • Partner with Product leadership on priorities and trade-offs, bringing recommendations rather than status updates.
  • Mentor others and help raise the quality of the team’s work.
