Staff Product Manager

Muon Space•San Jose, CA
•Hybrid

About The Position

Muon Space is hiring a Staff Product Manager to own one to two product areas end-to-end. Depending on the candidate’s background and company needs, areas may include the spacecraft platform, the RF and optical bits-to-ground data path, on-board high-performance compute, or the instrument portfolio. The role owns the roadmap and productization decisions—including architecture, capability tiers, SLAs, reuse versus customization, and, where applicable, pricing and packaging—that shape how Muon scales commercially and operationally. This is a deliberate Staff-level (L6) individual-contributor role reporting to the VP of Product. It requires making significant commercial and architectural decisions, engaging with engineering and leadership as a technical peer, and operating across hardware, software, operations, and go-to-market without a team to delegate to. The position is hybrid and requires working onsite at Muon’s San Jose, California office three days per week.

Requirements

  • 8–10 years of Product Management experience.
  • Demonstrated success owning complex, technically deep products spanning hardware, software, and data systems.
  • Track record of owning a large product area end-to-end, including its architectural, productization, and commercial decisions.
  • Strong fluency working with platform, infrastructure, and systems engineering leadership.
  • Ability to operate as a Staff-level individual contributor: make significant decisions, write clear strategy documents, drive alignment across senior stakeholders, and execute without a team to delegate to.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Must meet the stated export-controlled information access requirements: be a U.S. person, be eligible to access the information without required export authorization, or be eligible and reasonably likely to obtain the required authorization. The company may decline to pursue export licensing for legitimate business reasons.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree.
  • Familiarity with space systems and LEO constellations, including spacecraft platforms, instruments, ground segments, remote sensing, or satellite data pipelines.
  • Previous experience deploying or scaling a Product function within a space, defense, or deep-tech company.
  • Prior experience in startup or high-growth technology environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy and multi-quarter roadmap for one to two large Muon product areas.
  • Define reusable platform capabilities versus mission- or customer-specific customization, and shape architectural choices that work across multiple missions and customers.
  • Sequence the roadmap to support near-term deals while building reusable value for future ones.
  • Define how success is measured for the product area and hold the organization accountable to those measures.
  • Own productization decisions and drive the shift from bespoke, project-based commitments toward standardized, tiered offerings.
  • For the spacecraft platform, define platform variants, standard interfaces, and options for mission teams and customers; govern platform evolution across missions without creating one-off fragmentation.
  • For bits-to-ground, define end-to-end latency, availability, and throughput tiers; align ground segment, pipeline, and storage investments with those commitments; and set constellation downlink prioritization policy.
  • For on-board high-performance compute, define the capability roadmap and developer/SDK surface for mission payloads, and determine how on-board processing is exposed to internal mission teams and external customers.
  • For instruments, shape portfolio strategy, determine which capabilities are standardized or bespoke, specify and verify performance, and productize new instruments across missions.
  • Conduct customer and user discovery with external customers, internal mission teams, and partners; gather structured feedback and translate insights into roadmap decisions and productization experiments.
  • Partner with Growth to analyze won and lost deals, identify product gaps and competitive advantages, and feed structured insights into product and engineering investment.
  • Track competitive and technology trends relevant to the product area and assess where Muon leads, matches, or lags.
  • Partner with engineering across software, hardware, and operations.
  • Partner with the Growth organization on deal structure, contract language, and the boundary between standardized packaging and bespoke commercial terms.
  • Support go-to-market teams with sales enablement, technical documentation, RFP responses, customer demonstrations, and product positioning materials.
  • Work with Marketing on product messaging, website content, case studies, whitepapers, and thought-leadership content that supports demand generation.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Product and the broader product management team on cross-area roadmap trade-offs, prioritization, and fundraising-aligned narrative.
