About The Position

Chartis is hiring a Staff Product Designer to help shape products and experiences that support its work. The designer will create end-to-end experiences for internal tools and platforms, partnering with product managers, engineers, and subject matter experts to turn complex problems and workflows into clear, efficient, and trustworthy interfaces. The role includes designing for sophisticated users working in high-stakes, time-pressured environments, including AI-assisted workflows where people interpret model outputs, review recommendations, and collaborate with AI and human teammates. As part of a new product team, the Staff Product Designer will own design work from discovery through delivery and iteration, contribute to evolving design systems and standards, and help establish scalable practices. The position reports to the design manager and includes contributing to product strategy, advocating for design quality throughout the product lifecycle, and communicating design rationale and impact to non-designers. Remote work is allowed. Chartis has offices in Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., and Nashville.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of product design experience across web and/or mobile products.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual and interaction design craft, the ability to make complex information environments navigable and trustworthy, and measurable outcomes.
  • Recent hands-on experience designing and shipping at least one AI-powered feature, with the ability to explain key decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Active use of AI tools in the design workflow and comfort building interactive prototypes.
  • Ability to create clarity and make progress on complex, shifting problems without a fully scoped brief, owning work from framing through launch and iteration.
  • Experience building and contributing to design systems, including documentation for scalable components, patterns, and interaction models.
  • Sufficient understanding of AI systems, their behavior and limitations, and how they are evaluated to collaborate with product managers and engineers on practical, trustworthy designs.
  • Experience planning and conducting research with end users, from exploratory research through usability testing.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including explaining decisions, exchanging constructive feedback, and building alignment across teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in complex domains such as enterprise software, B2B, professional services, or healthcare.
  • Experience at early-stage startups and/or on small product teams.
  • Experience designing dashboards, analytical tools, or reporting surfaces for data-literate users.
  • Experience building complete design systems and component libraries from scratch.
  • Knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards, inclusive design practices, and regulatory and compliance considerations such as HIPAA.

Responsibilities

  • Design products and features end to end, from initial concept through launch and ongoing improvement, for tools used by Chartis consulting teams and their clients.
  • Turn complex, real-world workflows into clear, efficient, and trustworthy interfaces.
  • Design AI-assisted workflows, including interfaces for interpreting model outputs, reviewing recommendations, and collaborating with AI and human teammates.
  • Conduct user research with stakeholders to ground design decisions in real work context.
  • Work with product managers and engineers to understand AI model behavior and limitations, and design interfaces that set expectations and build trust.
  • Collaborate with engineering to preserve design intent through implementation and advocate for quality and user experience when tradeoffs arise.
  • Contribute to and maintain a design system serving multiple products, including improving its documentation, implementation, and cross-functional alignment.
  • Drive clarity about what needs to be designed and why, partnering with product managers to understand problems and user needs before developing solutions.
  • Help shape product strategy and roadmap decisions with an evidence-based user perspective.
  • Present research, prototypes, and design rationale through narratives and visuals that make the work’s impact clear to non-designers.
  • Lead design reviews, document decisions, and help raise the bar for product and user experience.
