Staff CPU Architecture and Performance Architect

Google•Austin, TX
•$192,000 - $278,000

About The Position

Be part of a team developing custom silicon solutions that power Google's direct-to-consumer products. The team combines AI, software, and hardware to develop technologies that make computing faster, seamless, and more powerful. As a CPU architecture and performance architect, you will contribute to improving processor instruction set architecture, developing microarchitecture features, and delivering Google's advanced SoC products. You will collaborate with system performance and software teams to plan and conduct application and benchmark performance analysis and project performance at different design phases. You will also guide junior CPU architects and work with power, thermal, security, physical design, and other subsystem teams to determine CPU subsystem configuration and features and support integration of the CPU subsystem into SoCs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience with CPU architecture and performance modeling.
  • Experience in performance modeling, performance analysis, and workload characterization.
  • Experience with computer architecture, microarchitecture, and digital design concepts.
  • Experience in product management and defining and developing X86 or ARM processors.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, emphasizing computer architecture or machine learning.
  • 12 years of experience with microprocessor architecture, microarchitecture, performance, and design.
  • Experience leading CPU and SoC performance model development, performance analysis, performance correlation, and workload characterization.
  • Experience with processor instruction set architectures such as ARM, RISC-V, or x86.
  • Experience with system software components such as Linux, drivers, and runtime.
  • Experience in chip design.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and evaluate CPU architecture features from architecture and performance perspectives.
  • Develop performance models for performance analysis and microarchitecture design studies.
  • Drive performance correlation between performance models and RTL implementations, including micro-benchmark development, pre-silicon performance correlation, and post-silicon performance analysis and debugging.
  • Collaborate with RTL design, design verification, physical design, and other teams to develop high-performance, efficient CPU implementations.
  • Architect chips or chip subsystems by analyzing data, writing specifications, coordinating and negotiating with stakeholders, and creating solutions.
  • Plan and conduct application and benchmark performance analysis and project performance at different design phases.
  • Guide junior CPU architects and collaborate with power, thermal, security, physical design, and other subsystem teams on CPU subsystem configuration, features, and SoC integration.
