About The Position

WHOOP is hiring a Staff Android Engineer for its Connectivity team to own the architecture and technical direction of the software that connects WHOOP hardware to the Android app. The team bridges embedded and mobile engineering to provide WHOOP members with a seamless, reliable experience. This role spans the Android connectivity layer, from BLE transport through history synchronization and firmware delivery, and focuses on scaling connection performance and availability across Android devices. At Staff level, the role’s impact includes influencing engineers and technical decisions beyond the immediate team. The engineer will work with hardware, firmware, software, and backend teams; establish and refine strap-to-Android communication protocols aligned with iOS standards; and use connectivity telemetry and user feedback to guide improvements. The position also involves mentoring and onboarding mobile engineers, supporting incident response and app releases, and representing Android Connectivity in cross-functional forums. The role is based in WHOOP’s Boston, Massachusetts office. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary. The position is full-time, with a stated U.S. base salary range of $170,000–$230,000, plus benefits and equity.

Requirements

  • Track record of influencing engineers beyond one's own team in applying architectural and platform design principles.
  • Expert knowledge of concurrency and multithreading best practices, including Kotlin coroutines and Flow.
  • Product-minded approach and empathy for the member experience.
  • Willingness to learn and grow rapidly across Android and external systems.
  • Extensive professional experience building, testing, debugging, and delivering native Android apps.
  • Expert knowledge of Android application structure and components, lifecycle, and Android Design Guidelines.
  • Strong experience with Jetpack Compose and modern declarative Android UI.
  • Experience with Kotlin and frameworks such as Koin, Android Jetpack libraries including ViewModel, Flows, and Navigation, Room, and Retrofit or OkHttp.
  • Experience designing modular architecture and dependency boundaries in a large multi-module Gradle codebase, including patterns such as MVI and MVVM.
  • Excellent knowledge of Android Studio, Gradle, and CI systems.
  • Experience debugging and diagnosing issues across complex or distributed systems involving firmware, mobile, and backend.
  • Experience using Git to organize feature work.
  • Experience communicating with a RESTful backend.
  • Commitment to automated testing and experience writing unit and UI tests.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, including cross-functional problem solving, tradeoff definition, and optimization.
  • Commitment to using AI tools in day-to-day work while ensuring AI-assisted work meets the same quality standards as personal contributions.
  • Must be prepared to work from WHOOP’s Boston, Massachusetts office and relocate if necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with WHOOP hardware, firmware, and software teams.
  • Establish and refine communication protocols between the WHOOP strap and Android, ensuring alignment with iOS standards.
  • Apply expertise in the Android Bluetooth stack to manage GATT operations, bonding, and reconnection logic.
  • Diagnose and mitigate OEM-specific Bluetooth, power-management, and permission behavior to improve reliability across Android devices.
  • Create and own systems for analyzing member connectivity health, and use telemetry to set team priorities.
  • Manage a prioritized backlog focused on reducing technical debt, improving code health, and enhancing module testability.
  • Improve engineering quality through code reviews, expanded test coverage, and architectural practices.
  • Use Kotlin to build product features and define patterns for the broader engineering team.
  • Document features and architecture using Jira and Confluence, and prepare code using GitHub feature, develop, and master branches.
  • Participate in the incident commander rotation for the WHOOP ecosystem.
  • Participate in the release process, including building the app, managing build variants and signing, testing and distributing through Firebase, and submitting to the Play Store.
  • Analyze and monitor user metrics and feedback to identify crash rates or potential bugs and improve engagement.
  • Represent Android Connectivity in cross-functional forums, including bug triage, product syncs, and firmware coordination.
  • Facilitate mobile developer ramp-up, mentor engineers across the Android organization, and assist the backend team with data contracts.
