Connectivity Engineer

Dexory•Nashville, TN

About The Position

Dexory is recruiting a Connectivity Engineer to help keep its global robot fleet online. Robots connect using cellular, Wi-Fi, and mesh VPN, often as guests on customer networks that Dexory does not control. This is not an enterprise networking role; the work is closer to software and customer support than to operating switches or campus networks. The role works with people throughout the business, from customers to employees deploying robots. The position is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and is hybrid, with the split open to discussion. It requires flexibility around customer needs, and occasional evening incidents may arise because robots operate across several time zones. The role includes occasional visits to warehouse sites in the UK and, less often, abroad. The engineer will initially work alongside the engineer who designed and runs the current stack. After onboarding, they will become the first point of contact for connectivity cases. Over time, they will develop expertise in cellular connectivity, mesh VPN design and access control, Wi-Fi in challenging RF environments, and Go tooling for a live fleet. As experience grows, they will take ownership of parts of the stack, such as router commissioning tools or fleet monitoring.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with networks, Linux systems, or deployed devices, gained at work or independently.
  • Comfort with a Linux command line and solid IP networking knowledge, including subnets, routing, NAT, DNS, DHCP, and firewalls.
  • Ability to use tcpdump or Wireshark to determine where traffic stops.
  • Experience writing scripts or tools that other people used, in any language, and willingness to work in Go.
  • Experience handling technical problems with customers or end users through support, field, or deployment work.
  • Methodical fault-finding and ability to keep track of troubleshooting steps.
  • Comfort working amid uncertainty and helping shape processes.
  • Flexibility to respond to occasional evening incidents.
  • When applying, include a short note about something technical built, broken, or fixed and what was learned.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with mesh VPN products such as Tailscale, Netbird, Headscale, Netmaker, Nebula, Defguard, or similar.
  • Experience with WireGuard, Tailscale, or Nebula.
  • Experience with cellular modems and SIMs.
  • Wi-Fi knowledge beyond the basics.
  • Experience with Prometheus or Grafana.
  • Background supporting or operating networked systems, such as at a telco or mobile operator, ISP, managed service provider, in IT support or IoT, or at another robotics company.
  • A home lab, self-hosted services, amateur radio, CTFs, or write-ups of problems solved.

Responsibilities

  • Own connectivity cases for customer sites from first report through resolution, working directly with customer IT on firewall rules, port access, and Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Work with customers to solve connectivity issues, follow up, and maintain active communications.
  • Diagnose faults across cellular, Wi-Fi, VPN, and DNS, and determine whether the issue is with the network or the application.
  • Commission and configure routers for new sites, and validate site networks before robots arrive.
  • Build and maintain tooling, mostly in Go and shell, to replace manual steps in router setup and fleet checks.
  • Add monitoring and alerts for discovered issues so they can be caught before customers notice.
  • Write runbooks and help shape incident and escalation processes.
  • Visit warehouse sites to test coverage and bring robots online, primarily in the UK and occasionally abroad.
  • Develop expertise in LTE/5G modems, SIMs and eSIMs, signal metrics, and working with carriers in different countries.
  • Develop mesh VPN designs using WireGuard and Tailscale, including access control as code.
  • Work on Wi-Fi in challenging RF environments, newer options such as Wi-Fi HaLow, and running site networks.
  • Write Go tooling that runs against a live fleet, with code review and testing.
  • As experience builds, take ownership of parts of the stack, such as router commissioning tooling or fleet monitoring.
