Jr. Staff Android Engineer

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

The Jr. Staff Android Engineer will help build next-generation connected digital cockpits by bridging high-performance vehicle hardware with intuitive, cloud-connected experiences. The initial focus is on platform security and connectivity: establishing hardware-backed trust with Qualcomm silicon, securing backend communication channels, and tuning network routing within a virtualized Android environment. The role is part of an adaptable engineering team, with opportunities to contribute across the broader Android stack as the platform matures. The engineer will work on secure certificate, key, and token management for mutual TLS; Android cellular networking, APN policies, and DNS whitelisting; virtual network integration between a host hypervisor and guest Android OS; SELinux policies and Binder IPC security boundaries; user profile isolation and secure token storage; and telemetry messaging over MQTT/TLS. Broader work includes building and maintaining Android framework services and system applications, collaborating on Android development across IPC, background services, application logic, and developer tooling, and helping shape architecture, code quality, and engineering standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in embedded software development, preferably in the automotive domain.
  • Experience with Android Automotive OS (AAOS) or infotainment domain controllers.
  • Familiarity with Qualcomm automotive platforms, such as Snapdragon Cockpit, or hypervisor environments such as QNX or Type-1 hypervisors.
  • Hands-on experience debugging SELinux policy denials using auditd or managing multi-user environments in Android.
  • Exposure to MQTT brokers and telemetry messaging patterns over cellular connections.
  • Hands-on Android development experience and familiarity with Kotlin, Java, and the Android framework.
  • Practical experience with, or a strong desire to learn, AOSP internals, native C/C++ services, and Binder/AIDL IPC.
  • Familiarity with TLS/mTLS, PKI/certificates, token-based authentication such as JWT and OAuth2, and Android KeyStore or hardware security modules such as Qualcomm TrustZone/KeyMint.
  • A solid grasp of IP networking, DNS, routing concepts, and socket communications in Linux or Android environments.
  • A pragmatic, adaptable approach to infrastructure and security work as well as feature-level Android development.

Responsibilities

  • Connect Android Keystore/KeyMint with Qualcomm TrustZone to securely manage certificates, keys, and token lifecycles for backend mTLS communication.
  • Configure Android networking pipelines, cellular APN policies, and DNS whitelisting to route private telematics, cloud APIs, and consumer traffic through appropriate channels.
  • Integrate virtual network interfaces, including virtio-net and bridging, across the host hypervisor and guest Android OS.
  • Write and refine SELinux policies and define Binder IPC boundaries to support secure, stable, and compliant platform services.
  • Support user profile isolation, secure storage for JWTs and session tokens, and telemetry messaging using protocols such as MQTT over TLS.
  • Build, extend, and maintain Android framework services and system applications for core cockpit experiences.
  • Collaborate on Android development spanning IPC, background services, application logic, and developer tooling.
  • Contribute to architecture, code quality, and engineering standards as the software footprint grows.
