Sr. CMM/Metrology Engineer

Coastal Machine & Supply•Carencro, LA
•Onsite

About The Position

Coastal Machine & Supply is hiring a Senior CMM / Metrology Engineer for its onsite facility in Carencro, Louisiana. This newly created role will own the measurement system that enables the company to bring new defense and space part families into production with confidence. The engineer will develop and maintain repeatable, documented metrology capability and help determine whether new parts can be inspected, how quickly, and to what proven level of capability. The role establishes the metrology standard for new and existing part families, including a controlled, version-managed CMM program for each family based on the print's datum scheme. It also establishes repeatable inspection fixturing and safeguards measurement-system integrity through MSA and Gage R&R. The engineer will ready documented inspection capability for new part families and share knowledge with the CMM programmer so that standards can be executed consistently by others. The work is split between a temperature-controlled inspection environment and the production floor, with regular movement between the two. It involves extended standing, close-vision work at the CMM, handling inspection fixtures and parts, and using standard shop-floor PPE on the production floor. Lift assistance and equipment are available for heavier items.

Requirements

  • Deep CMM programming and GD&T interpretation skills, including independently reading a part's datum scheme and building a controlled inspection program to it.
  • Ability to align print, machining-fixture, and CMM datums.
  • Strong MSA and Gage R&R judgment, including the ability to distinguish measurement-system error from genuine part variation.
  • Experience building metrology standards—including programs, method sheets, and fixturing standards—that another person can execute independently.

Nice To Haves

  • PC-DMIS programming experience; comparable platforms such as Calypso or PolyWorks are transferable when GD&T foundations are strong.
  • Hexagon CMM hardware experience.
  • SPC fluency, including control charts, control limits, and distinguishing common-cause from special-cause variation.
  • Aerospace, defense, or space manufacturing background and familiarity with AS9100 or AS9102.
  • ProShop or comparable ERP/QMS experience.
  • Experience preparing FAIR or source-inspection packages for customer or government source inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Own metrology standards for new and existing part families, including one controlled, version-managed CMM program per family built to the print's datum scheme.
  • Create inspection fixturing standards that locate parts repeatably regardless of who operates the equipment.
  • Prove measurement-system repeatability through Gage R&R and MSA before claiming capability, and distinguish measurement error from genuine part variation.
  • Establish documented, proven inspection capability for each new part family in time to support production commitments and inform new-program go/no-go decisions.
  • Co-develop metrology standards with the CMM programmer to ensure capability is shared and not dependent on one person.
