About The Position

A Senior Associate Scientist (R2) will join the Upstream Process Development group within Pfizer’s Bioprocess R&D organization. The group develops and optimizes manufacturing processes for recombinant proteins and other modalities for early- and late-phase human clinical trials. The scientist designs and executes laboratory experiments in bench-top bioreactors and associated scale-down equipment to develop robust, scalable, high-productivity processes. The role also involves working with pilot, clinical, and commercial production facilities to support accurate technology transfer, successful large-scale production, and regulatory filing activities. The scientist may contribute to technology development projects that improve production processes and control strategies using process analytical technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of industrial experience, or a Master’s degree with 0–2 years of experience, in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • Relevant research experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to grasp scientific concepts, interpret complex data, and formulate hypotheses.
  • Competency in aseptic laboratory technique and ability to design and carry out complex experiments and interpret data.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborative projects and ability to communicate effectively with scientists and management in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Permanent work authorization in the United States; U.S. work visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with high-throughput bioreactor platforms, including ambr15 and ambr250 systems.
  • Expertise in fed-batch or perfusion bioreactor operations, including process setup, control, troubleshooting, and scale-up of mammalian cell culture processes.
  • Proficiency in process modeling and multivariate data analysis for process characterization and predictive process understanding.
  • Experience with Python programming, workflow automation, or app development to create tools for experimental planning, data analysis, visualization, and knowledge-sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments in scale-down models, including shake flasks and bioreactors, to develop robust, high-yield, scalable manufacturing processes.
  • Serve as the upstream technical lead and support accurate technology transfer to pilot and GMP manufacturing facilities.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing campaigns as needed.
  • Document data accurately and promptly in electronic lab notebooks.
  • Author technical reports and contribute to relevant sections of regulatory submissions, such as INDs and BLAs.
  • Participate in lab and project team discussions on experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient, harmonious laboratory environment as a collaborative team member.
  • Occasionally work weekends to passage flasks, sample bioreactors, or perform other essential tasks.

Benefits

  • 401(k) plan with Pfizer matching contributions and an additional Pfizer Retirement Savings Contribution.
