About The Position

A Senior Associate Scientist (R2) position is available in the Upstream Process Development group within Pfizer’s Bioprocess R&D organization. The successful candidate will join scientists and engineers developing and optimizing manufacturing processes for recombinant proteins and other modalities for early- and late-phase human clinical trials. The role involves designing and executing laboratory experiments in bench-top bioreactors and associated scale-down equipment to develop robust, scalable, high-productivity processes. The scientist will serve as an upstream technical lead, supporting technology transfer to pilot and GMP manufacturing facilities, large-scale production, and related regulatory filing activities. The role may also contribute to technology-development projects that improve production processes and control strategies using process analytical technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of industrial experience, or a master’s degree with 0–2 years of experience, in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • Relevant research experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to grasp scientific concepts, interpret complex data, and formulate new hypotheses.
  • Competency in aseptic laboratory technique and the ability to design and conduct complex experiments and interpret data.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborative projects and the ability to communicate effectively with scientists and management in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Permanent work authorization in the United States; U.S. work visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with high-throughput bioreactor platforms, including ambr15 and ambr250 systems.
  • Expertise in fed-batch or perfusion bioreactor operations, including process setup, control, troubleshooting, and scale-up of mammalian cell culture processes.
  • Proficiency in process modeling and multivariate data analysis for process characterization and predictive process understanding.
  • Experience with Python programming, workflow automation, or app development to create tools that improve experimental planning, data analysis, visualization, and knowledge-sharing for process development scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments using appropriate scale-down models, such as shake flasks and bioreactors, to develop robust, high-yield, scalable manufacturing processes.
  • Serve as the upstream technical lead and ensure accurate technology transfer to pilot and GMP manufacturing facilities.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing campaigns as needed.
  • Document data accurately and promptly in electronic lab notebooks.
  • Author technical reports and contribute to relevant sections of regulatory submissions, including INDs and BLAs.
  • Participate in lab and project team discussions about experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient, and harmonious laboratory environment as a collaborative team member.
  • Occasionally perform essential weekend tasks, such as passaging flasks or sampling bioreactors.

Benefits

  • 401(k) plan with Pfizer matching contributions and an additional Pfizer retirement savings contribution.
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and personal days.
  • Paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
  • Medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Potential relocation assistance based on business needs and/or eligibility.
