About The Position
Arlington Public Schools is hiring a Special Education Assistant for a 1.0 FTE position at Abingdon ES. The assistant supports teachers and students in general education and special education classrooms, working under teacher direction and supervision. The role requires effective collaboration and communication with staff, parents, and children, as well as understanding the educational needs of both special education and general education students, including students who need physical or sensory assistance. Candidates must meet the NCLB and ESEA requirements in effect at the time of hire. Compensation is based on the 2026/27 pay plan. The A-Scale rate for benefit-eligible positions is $24.60–$46.79 per hour. Newly hired employees with previous experience in their field may receive salary credit for up to five years of related experience. Arlington Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer.
Requirements
- Experience working with students with special needs.
- Experience working in an elementary setting.
- Clear understanding of the educational needs of special education and general education students.
- Reliable, dependable, and flexible.
- Meet NCLB and ESEA requirements at the time of hire.
- High school diploma and an associate degree or two years of college study (at least 60 semester hours), or a score of at least 455 on the Parapro Test.
