About The Position

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona is hiring a full-time, federally certified Spanish interpreter to be stationed in Phoenix. More than one position may be filled. The office provides federal criminal defense to people unable to afford counsel. This position supports assistant federal public defenders with trial preparation, litigation support, and client preparation. It requires maintaining the confidentiality of all interpreted communications. Extensive travel may be required to meet clients at detention centers. The position is in the excepted service, does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service, is at will, and is subject to the availability of funds.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
Federal certification by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts for Spanish<>English.
At least five years of federal interpreting experience, or comparable experience with an advanced degree.
U.S. citizenship.
Ability to analyze, evaluate, and apply relevant policies and procedures to office operations.
Good judgment and general knowledge of office practices and legal processes.
Ability to type and use a personal computer.
Satisfactory background investigation.

Responsibilities

Interpret and translate legal documents, correspondence, transcripts, treaties, foreign documents, legal provisions, and other case-related materials.
Provide litigation support and help prepare clients for trial.
Transcribe audio and videotape recordings.
Interpret attorney-client meetings, witness interviews, telephone conversations, jail visits, office court proceedings, pre-sentence interviews, and interviews with other government officials as permitted by the court.
Maintain confidentiality of all interpreted communications.
Perform other duties as assigned.
