About The Position

This position provides foreign-language interpretation, written translation, and educational assistance for non-English-speaking customers, students, or participants. The Interpreter communicates information accurately, impartially, clearly, and concisely among patients, families, healthcare staff, and physicians. The role is with University of Utah Health, an organization whose mission includes patient care, research, and education, and whose system includes five hospitals and eleven clinics.

Requirements

Associate's degree in a foreign language, or equivalent.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written text.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
Ability to work independently and efficiently while maintaining composure and sensitivity in a healthcare environment.

Nice To Haves

Depending on the department of hire, knowledge of medical terminology may be required.

Responsibilities

Interpret communication between staff and non-English-speaking people.
Translate written educational materials and documents according to readability guidelines.
Follow up with non-English-speaking people about individual patients’ status and answer questions.
Assist non-English-speaking people in completing medical, financial, and related forms.
Escort non-English-speaking people to the appropriate service area.
May provide patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with nursing and rehabilitation staff.
