About The Position

LSS is hiring an on-call Interpreter to provide in-person interpretation and written translation for non-English speakers seeking medical, legal, and community services. Assignments take place at the Multi-Cultural Center and throughout the Sioux Falls area. Applicants must reside in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota metropolitan area. The position offers flexible scheduling and variable pay based on appointments, with on-call hours of 0–29 per week. Interpreters communicate with clients before sessions, review session briefings, and provide accurate, real-time interpretation in both directions while conveying intent and context. They are expected to maintain a professional demeanor and respect cultural differences and special needs. Medical assignments may require health screenings, vaccinations, and medical examinations established by the assignment location or partner organization. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States when hired. LSS does not provide visa sponsorship or relocation assistance. Applications are accepted only through the LSS careers page. Requirements

Must reside near the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
High school diploma or GED required; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Must have bilingual skills and fluency in written and spoken English and at least one target language.
For medical interpretation assignments, must meet applicable health screening, vaccination, and medical examination requirements established by assignment locations or partner organizations.
Must successfully complete required background screenings in accordance with agency policy and applicable law.
Must possess a valid driver's license, maintain proof of automobile insurance, and meet agency requirements for approved driver status, or be able to obtain approved driver status upon hire.
Must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.

Nice To Haves

Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Kunama, French, Swahili, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Haitian-Creole, Tigrinya, or another high-demand language is preferred.
Fluency in additional languages is encouraged.

Responsibilities

Provide professional in-person verbal and/or written interpretation across the Sioux Falls area.
Provide translation services for written documents across the Sioux Falls area.
Conduct pre-session communications with clients and non-English speakers.
Receive and review session briefings before interpreting.
Provide real-time, face-to-face interpretation, accurately translating spoken statements in both directions.
Use active listening to interpret intent and context effectively.
Maintain a professional demeanor and respect cultural differences and special needs.
