About The Position

Tools & Infrastructure is a small, growing team that builds software for hardware test setups, lab research rigs, lab automation, and proprietary hardware-research tooling. The team works at the intersection of machine learning, hardware, and software, enabling researchers and hardware engineers to run experiments, collect data, and trust their results. The role designs and builds macOS tools and applications, primarily using Python and Swift, and develops company-wide tools that are supported as products for internal users. It involves taking problems from initial discussions with lab users through design, implementation, deployment, and iteration. The engineer also integrates instruments, sensors, and custom hardware; builds supporting infrastructure such as dashboards, databases, data pipelines, and reporting; and implements algorithms that turn raw measurements into usable results. Windows environments may also need support when required by lab equipment or vendor software. The role uses advanced AI coding tools as part of daily development and contributes to design and code reviews and the quality and maintainability of the team's tools.

Requirements

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on software development experience, with a track record of shipping tools or applications that others use.
  • Solid working experience in Python application development.
  • Genuine interest in hardware; comfort working around lab equipment, reading datasheets, and debugging across the hardware/software boundary.
  • Ability to take an open-ended problem from requirements through deployment and deliver a complete working solution independently.
  • Good programming fundamentals, including data structures, concurrency, I/O, testing, and debugging.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with advanced AI coding tools, such as Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar, as part of daily engineering practice.
  • Strong communication skills and a service mindset toward internal users such as researchers and hardware engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Swift, TypeScript, and React, and ability to become productive with them quickly; experience with macOS.
  • Experience building lab automation, test fixtures, instrument control, or measurement software, such as SCPI/VISA, DAQ, oscilloscopes, or power supplies.
  • Experience with hardware interfaces and protocols such as USB, UART, SPI/I2C, BLE, or network-based device control.
  • Experience building dashboards and databases for engineering data, in web or cloud environments and using SQL or NoSQL.
  • Experience implementing signal-processing or other algorithms in Python.
  • Experience with Windows development or tooling and cross-platform deployment.
  • C, C++, or Objective-C experience for performance-sensitive or driver-adjacent code.
  • Background in embedded or firmware-adjacent development.
  • Hobby or personal hardware projects, such as electronics, 3D printing, sensors, or robotics.
  • Experience with CI/CD, packaging, and distributing internal tools to many users.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build macOS tools and applications, primarily in Python and Swift, for hardware test setups, lab research setups, and lab automation.
  • Develop and support company-wide tools used by multiple teams for proprietary hardware research.
  • Own problems end to end: understand needs with lab users, design and implement solutions, deploy them, and iterate until they work in the lab.
  • Integrate instruments, sensors, and custom hardware over USB, serial, Bluetooth, network, and other lab interfaces.
  • Build supporting infrastructure as needed, including cloud dashboards, databases, data pipelines, and reporting for test and research results.
  • Implement algorithms and data-processing logic that turn raw measurements into usable results.
  • Support Windows environments when lab equipment or vendor software requires it.
  • Use advanced AI coding tools as a core part of development and help the team work more effectively with them.
  • Participate in design and code reviews and help improve the quality and maintainability of team tools.
