Software Engineer, Platform Team

The Voleon Group
•$235,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Voleon is a technology company applying AI and machine learning to real-world problems in finance. The Software Engineer on the Software Platform team designs and evolves distributed systems that support research and trading workflows across on-premises and cloud environments. The team develops core distributed services, cloud platforms, job scheduling and execution systems, and standardized storage interfaces that abstract infrastructure complexity while delivering reliable, scalable services. This high-impact role operates at the platform services layer rather than bare-metal infrastructure, emphasizing distributed systems design, strong abstractions, and operational excellence. The engineer partners with Infrastructure, Security, application engineering teams, and ML researchers to build foundational capabilities that improve firm-wide reliability, performance, and productivity. The collaborative team values experimentation, clear ownership, and efficient execution.

Requirements

  • Computer Science or Engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of software engineering experience.
  • Proven software design and implementation experience focused on correctness, robustness, efficiency, and scale.
  • Expertise in a modern programming language such as Python, Go, Java, or C++.
  • Hands-on experience developing in a Linux/UNIX environment.
  • Experience designing and implementing scalable services and APIs, highly available systems, and/or large-scale data infrastructure.
  • Experience with data storage and management technologies such as PostgreSQL, Artifactory, Ceph, or Redis.
  • Familiarity with job scheduling and orchestration technologies such as Airflow or Slurm.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data storage, querying, and processing technologies.
  • Experience working with large codebases and building modular, extensible, and maintainable software.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and simply.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement distributed scheduling and workflow systems.
  • Improve job prioritization, resource allocation, and orchestration across hybrid environments.
  • Build scalable, reliable platform services and storage abstractions.
  • Lead complex projects from design through production delivery, including gathering requirements, translating them into software designs, reasoning about supporting or dependent technologies, and communicating with collaborators and teammates.
  • Improve system reliability, observability, and operational performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineering and research staff.
  • Mentor and grow individual contributors to continuously improve the team.

Benefits

  • A referral program offers the potential to earn $7,500 if a referred candidate is successfully hired and employed by The Voleon Group, subject to program terms and eligibility.
