About the position
Science is seeking an experienced web engineer to help build out their software platform called Helix for designing, executing, and tracking manufacturing processes for products ranging from semiconductor wafers to cell lines. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience as a web software engineer, including significant depth in both frontend and backend engineering. They should also have the ability to act as their own product manager and track down the next feature or product that will be most immediately useful for the least coding effort. The candidate should have a strong sense of when it's appropriate to address mounting technical debt, and when to keep building new features. The role requires demonstrated ability to quickly ship with little oversight in a chaotic startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Build and develop a software platform called Helix for designing, executing, and tracking manufacturing processes for products ranging from semiconductor wafers to cell lines
- Collaborate with a world-class team of scientists and engineers to build tools that they will use every day
- Act as your own product manager and track down the next feature or product that will be most immediately useful for the least coding effort
- Have a strong sense of when it's appropriate to address mounting technical debt, and when to keep building new features
- Quickly ship with little oversight in a chaotic startup environment
- Work with the microfabrication and biology teams to build tools that they will use every day
- Have great communication skills and technical and product judgment above all
- Ask the right questions to absorb other people’s mental models, then turn around and build things that make sense for the situation, quickly
- Have 5+ years as a web software engineer, including significant depth in both frontend and backend engineering
- Be experienced with at least some of these technologies: Rails / React / Typescript / PostgreSQL (preferred)
- Be able to independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.

- Strong sense of when it's appropriate to address mounting technical debt, and when to keep building new features
- Demonstrated ability to quickly ship with little oversight in a chaotic startup environment
- Experience with Rails/React/Typescript/PostgreSQL is a major plus
