Site Reliability Engineer

Leidos•Norfolk, VA

About The Position

The NMCI Service Management Integration and Transport (SMIT) group at Leidos seeks a Site Reliability Engineer to improve the reliability, performance, and scalability of complex distributed systems. Under the SMIT Contract, the team supports the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet core backbone, including cybersecurity services, network operations and engineering, service desk, seat support services, and data transport. This role contributes to developing robust, scalable services that operate reliably in production and to the maturity of the Site Reliability Engineering program. The engineer supports, migrates, automates, and optimizes software development and deployment processes, infrastructure as code, and cloud infrastructure. Working with SRE, development, and operations teams, the engineer creates automated testing frameworks and workflows that validate services under normal and stressed conditions, including failure scenarios. The role also maintains complex computer systems by writing code to automate releases, monitor systems, and identify and resolve problems before they affect users. The position requires supporting program execution in classified environments and the ability to access SIPRNet from an NMCI location on short notice, involving local travel. The role requires an active DoD Secret security clearance and a DoD 8570.01 IAT Level II certification before onboarding, which must be maintained while supporting the SMIT Contract.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 4–8 years of prior relevant experience, or a master's degree and 2–6 years of prior relevant experience; additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Currently possess and be able to maintain an active DoD Secret security clearance.
  • DoD 8570.01 IAT Level II certification required before onboarding and maintained while supporting the SMIT Contract.
  • Ability to support program execution in classified environments and access SIPRNet from an NMCI location on short notice, including local travel.
  • Experience with CI/CD toolsets such as Jenkins or GitLab.
  • Good command of Linux/Unix and command-line knowledge.
  • Experience in application administration, configuration, and integration.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
  • Ability to work effectively with a distributed team in a collaborative, forward-thinking, innovation-driven environment.
  • Knowledge of Agile and DevSecOps/SRE concepts and best practices, and a desire to develop that knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience with Atlassian products such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
  • Experience creating Jira and/or Azure DevOps workflows, projects, and custom configurations.
  • Experience administering or maintaining an SRE platform using Ansible playbooks, such as upgrading Jenkins.
  • Experience automating tasks with scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python.
  • Experience integrating with or maintaining third-party CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and GitLab.
  • Experience with PaaS using Red Hat OpenShift/Kubernetes and Docker containers.
  • Experience with commercial cloud infrastructure deployment environments such as AWS and Azure.
  • Experience with automated provisioning and configuration tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, or similar technologies.
  • Working knowledge of the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and DISA STIGs.
  • Working knowledge of Git, Bitbucket, Jenkins, and Jira for software development activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience providing support to the NGEN-NMCI program.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation for automating test environments.
  • ITILv4, Scrum Master, or Agile SAFe certifications, or applicable experience.
  • Experience with automated script design, coding, debugging, and maintenance using Bash, Python, or similar tools.

Responsibilities

  • Work with development and operations teams to support speedy, reliable software deployments, monitor systems, and improve platform reliability.
  • Document system bugs and resolve them when appropriate.
  • Use AI coding tools and script repositories to automate, scale, test, and secure cloud infrastructure and pipelines.
  • Improve performance monitoring using Splunk or other dashboard reporting tools.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and optimize cloud infrastructure performance.
  • Recommend improvements to engineering build, maintenance, automation, and reliability practices using SRE/DevOps tools and infrastructure-as-code approaches.
  • Develop and code pipeline automation workflows for use inside and outside the cloud platform, aligned with business and technology strategies.
  • Develop and execute tests simulating real-world failure scenarios, including network disruptions, hardware failures, and system overloads.
  • Create, script, and run performance tests to measure system behavior under varying load and traffic levels.
  • Identify bottlenecks, performance degradation, and opportunities for optimization.
  • Design, implement, and maintain automated test suites for infrastructure and application components.
  • Integrate testing into the CI/CD pipeline to validate system reliability with every release.
  • Build automated systems for continuous performance, stress, and load testing.
  • Work with SRE, development, and operations teams to define reliability goals and testing strategies.
  • Ensure new services and features are tested for performance, reliability, and failure recovery before production deployment.
  • Test monitoring, logging, and alerting mechanisms under failure conditions.
  • Ensure SLIs and SLOs are accurately measured and tracked through automated testing frameworks.
  • Independently resolve most conflicts between timeline, budget, and scope, and raise consequential issues to senior management.
