About The Position

This course, URD1041HF - Introduction to Urban Design Theory, is an introduction to contemporary urbanism and urban design. In a seminar format, students will explore theoretical writings and manifestoes, as well as urban projects and practices. These will be examined as attempts to shape the physical organization of cities in response to the forces driving change in modern urban society. The course is not a comprehensive historical survey but rather a critical review of approaches to urbanism, including theories, positions, design projects, and insights into contemporary urban design practice. The estimated course enrollment is 12 students, with no estimated TA support. The class is scheduled for Tuesdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in a room to be determined. The appointment dates are from September 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

Requirements

  • MArch or MLA with an MUD degree or professional architectural or urban design experience preferred.
  • Proven record of teaching graduate-level seminars in history and theory of urbanism, urban design, or cities.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Architecture or related disciplines is preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of both non-Western and Western contexts is preferred.
