Senior Technical Product Manager, Internal Software

Fervo Energy•Oakland, CA
•$180,000 - $250,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Senior Technical Product Manager, Internal Software will lead the development of internal software tools across Fervo Energy. The role connects internal users with the engineers building their tools, translating ambiguous needs into actionable product requirements. The position works across engineering, construction, drilling, completions, supply chain, finance, and operations to understand workflows and identify obstacles to execution. The role calls for a technically strong product manager or former software engineer who can code, partner credibly with engineers, and move between product strategy and software execution. In the near term, the position owns product direction, technical scoping, delivery, adoption, and build-versus-buy decisions. As the function scales, it may evolve into leadership of Fervo’s internal software development team. The role also establishes product and delivery practices for internal software development and collaborates with Fervo’s AI and machine learning team on useful data, model, and automation integrations. The role may be based in Fervo’s Houston, Texas or Oakland, California office. It follows a hybrid schedule, with employees expected to work in the office three days per week. Some travel between Fervo offices and project sites may be encouraged.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience across software engineering, technical product management, internal tools, platform product, software delivery, or related roles.
  • Prior experience as a software engineer, technical founder, technical product manager, engineering lead, or similarly hands-on software builder.
  • Ability to code sufficiently to prototype, evaluate implementation tradeoffs, and work credibly with software engineers.
  • Experience owning software products or tools from discovery through launch and iteration.
  • Strong product judgment, including translating user pain points into clear requirements, prioritizing competing needs, and defining success.
  • Experience working directly with end users to understand workflows, gather feedback, and drive adoption.
  • Strong execution orientation, including managing ambiguity, sequencing work, unblocking progress, and shipping quickly.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with limited structure and high ownership.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including communicating tradeoffs, risks, and progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building internal tools, scheduling software, enterprise applications such as ERP, operational systems, or platform products.
  • Experience in a startup, scale-up, or small high-ownership technical team.
  • Experience working with or managing software engineers, contractors, or technical vendors.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar platforms.
  • Experience integrating software with third-party systems, APIs, databases, internal data platforms, or business applications.
  • Experience supporting teams with complex operational workflows, such as construction, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure, or capital projects.
  • Interest in eventually helping build and lead an internal software development team.

Responsibilities

  • Own internal software product development from idea through adoption, including understanding workflows, pain points, operating rhythms, and decision-making needs across teams.
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into product requirements, technical specifications, user stories, and success criteria.
  • Design for an integrated software ecosystem that connects with existing systems, data sources, and future internal platforms.
  • Measure product success through adoption, workflow improvement, and business impact.
  • Partner with software engineers, contractors, and technical partners to scope, sequence, and deliver internal tools.
  • Evaluate technical tradeoffs and make pragmatic implementation decisions; contribute to prototyping, agentic coding workflows, technical review, or lightweight implementation when helpful.
  • Own delivery cadence, backlog management, sprint planning, stakeholder updates, and risk escalation.
  • Develop software tools that improve complex work across engineering, construction, project execution, documentation, scheduling, modeling, procurement, and operations.
  • Identify manual processes, disconnected data, and inefficient tools; build practical, usable products and maintain user feedback loops before and after launch.
  • Audit the internal software stack and recommend whether to build, buy, integrate, or retire tools based on business value, cost, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Advise on the resource requirements and tradeoffs of in-house software development, avoiding unnecessary overbuilding and unresolved workflow problems.
  • Partner with the AI and machine learning team to integrate internal data, models, and automation into software tools.
  • Identify practical uses for LLMs and agentic workflows to reduce repetitive work such as document parsing, report generation, data entry, workflow automation, and decision support.
  • Use modern coding and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate prototyping and delivery.
  • Establish an operating model and product and delivery practices for internal software development at Fervo.
  • Help determine which software capabilities should be developed internally versus contracted externally and potentially build and lead a small internal software development team.
