Senior Software Engineer, API Systems

Book of the Month•New York, NY
•$125,000 - $180,000

About The Position

The Engineering team at Book of the Month develops and maintains the company’s website, mobile apps, and internal business systems. The team collaborates with Product, Design, engineers, and stakeholders to take projects from inception to launch on quick, iterative timelines while balancing quality and business impact. The Senior Software Engineer architects technical solutions to complex problems, ensures consistent delivery of roadmapped features, and improves code efficacy, performance, and maintainability. The role owns the end-to-end creation of customer-facing features used by hundreds of thousands of users and architects and maintains systems supporting inventory, order management, financial operations, and fulfillment. It also helps keep APIs, the website, and mobile apps fast and reliable during unpredictable traffic spikes. The engineer works with technical and non-technical stakeholders to find practical, cost-effective solutions, writes detailed technical specifications, reviews peers’ specifications, and mentors engineers. The role includes writing code and directing code generation, verifying solutions throughout development—including happy and unhappy paths—and monitoring outcomes after release.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of work experience delivering high-quality production code.
  • Develop high-quality production code in event-driven systems; Node.js is preferred.
  • Use typed languages to preserve API contract integrity, store clean data, support future expansion, and avoid regressions; TypeScript is preferred.
  • Model data in relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL and evolve schemas safely against live production data.
  • Design and version REST APIs with clear, reliable contracts and consistent backward compatibility.
  • Build and maintain test suites rigorous enough to serve as a trusted production-release quality gate.
  • Optimize SQL, minimize database trips, manage in-memory load, and use third-party services such as Redis, Kafka, and SQS.
  • Demonstrate a solution-oriented approach to breaking down problems and using new technologies to find innovative solutions.
  • Embrace ownership of development and quality from creation through delivery to end users.
  • Navigate ambiguity and drive complex problems toward solutions.
  • Collaborate with others and learn new skills to help with tasks such as reproducing bugs, creating frontend components, and finding data gaps for analytics.
