Senior Software Engineer, API & Automation
About The Position
Formlabs is seeking a Software Engineer to join its API & Automation team. The team develops a developer-friendly platform that enables programmatic access to PreForm and Formlabs printers, including APIs, SDKs, and automation tools for integrating customer and partner applications and workflows with the Formlabs ecosystem. The work spans desktop applications, embedded devices, networking, and cloud services. The engineer will build software where reliability, usability, and system design are equally important, with software that ultimately controls physical manufacturing processes. Formlabs is open to candidates at all experience levels, from early-career engineers to experienced engineers, and prior 3D printing experience is not required.
Requirements
- Experience building APIs, SDKs, or other developer-facing software.
- Strong foundation in software architecture, data structures, object-oriented software design, and cloud services.
- Enjoys working on ambiguous and technically challenging problems that span multiple systems.
- Comfortable working across system boundaries and debugging complex interactions between software components.
- Interest in the interaction between software and physical devices.
- Highly user-focused and motivated by building software that makes a real difference for its users.
- Takes ownership, has a bias toward action, and is comfortable making decisions and moving work forward.
- Able to collaborate effectively with engineers and technical teams across different disciplines.
Nice To Haves
- Experience designing or working with APIs using technologies such as REST, gRPC, OpenAPI, or AsyncAPI.
- Experience with messaging systems such as NATS or MQTT.
- Experience writing C++ code, from academic or personal projects to production software.
- Experience with MES or industrial automation.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, or cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with embedded systems or networking.
- Experience building AI-powered applications.
- Experience with 3D graphics, computational geometry, robotics, or simulation.
Responsibilities
- Design and build production APIs and SDKs for interacting with Formlabs software, printers, and manufacturing workflows.
- Build reliable automation systems that enable customers to integrate print preparation and Formlabs printers into their software and workflows.
- Ship value-generating customer features by building and evolving reliable, easy-to-use APIs.
- Work with Product Management teams and external developers to solve complex problems and shape long-term technical direction.
