Senior Software Engineer - Media API Platform

Bloomberg•New York, NY
•$160,000 - $240,000

About The Position

Bloomberg Media’s Media API Platform team builds and operates the API layer supporting Bloomberg Media’s digital products. The team helps engineers deliver reliable, scalable, and secure APIs, with tools and standards for building, discovering, and consuming APIs across the organization. Its platform includes an internal GraphQL gateway spanning user and media domains, a public GraphQL gateway for client-facing applications, and shared API infrastructure such as centralized authentication and authorization, rate limiting, token management, and job management. The team prioritizes reliability through automated regression testing, nightly and post-deployment test suites, daily test reports, and observability tooling, including AI-assisted capabilities for investigating latency regressions. This role contributes to a high-impact platform serving millions of users and handling up to 300,000 requests per minute. The engineer will work with a modern technology stack and help advance GraphQL infrastructure, caching and performance, and AI-assisted and agentic software development workflows. The role includes advising client developer teams on GraphQL best practices, developing tools and workflows for a secure and well-governed federated graph, and advancing shared initiatives such as identity and access management, observability, and job scheduling. It also involves evaluating vendor and open-source products, partnering with product and content teams, making technical decisions, designing APIs, and mentoring engineers.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building and running backend services in production, including ownership of systems relied upon by other teams.
  • Expertise in at least one of JavaScript/TypeScript (Node), Java, Kotlin, or Python.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, including service-to-service communication, caching, rate limiting, failure modes, and reliability at scale.
  • Current hands-on use of AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools.
  • Experience debugging production issues at web scale.
  • Comfort with HTTP and core networking concepts including DNS, TLS, proxies, and load balancers, and with logs, metrics, and traces for diagnosing latency spikes or intermittent failures.
  • Strong cross-team collaboration, including the ability to work in other teams’ codebases, understand their domains, and help design APIs or graphs and build alignment.
  • A practice of making systems safer and easier for others through automated testing, CI/CD, clear standards, and good documentation.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, with a track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on GraphQL experience, especially Apollo Federation, schema design, and subgraph development.
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with authentication and authorization systems such as OAuth, JWT, or service identity/IAM.
  • Experience with AWS and container-based deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert GraphQL guidance to client developer teams on best practices.
  • Grow the graph securely to support future agentic clients.
  • Develop and promote internal and open-source GraphQL tooling for seamless deployments and adoption of a well-governed federated graph.
  • Implement agentic workflows to improve graph quality and development speed.
  • Drive initiatives including organization-wide identity and access management adoption, advanced observability, and upgraded job scheduling services for critical offline workflows.
  • Analyze open-source and vendor products and advise on buy-versus-build decisions.
  • Partner with product and content teams across the organization, lead technical decisions, design robust APIs, and mentor engineers.
  • Build and operate the API layer and shared infrastructure used across Bloomberg Media, including gateways, authentication and authorization, rate limiting, token management, and job management.
  • Contribute to API reliability through automated regression suites, test reporting, and observability tooling.
  • Address federated GraphQL caching challenges and optimize API response times and throughput.
