Software Engineer, API & Automation
About The Position
Formlabs is hiring a Software Engineer for its API & Automation team. The team develops a developer-friendly platform for programmatic access to PreForm and Formlabs printers, including APIs, SDKs, and automation tools that connect customer and partner applications and workflows with the Formlabs ecosystem. The work spans desktop applications, embedded devices, networking, and cloud services, and involves building software that controls physical manufacturing processes. The role is open to engineers at all experience levels. The engineer will build production APIs, SDKs, and reliable automation systems that help customers integrate print preparation and Formlabs printers into their software and workflows. They will work with Product Management and external developers to solve complex problems, ship useful features, and shape the platform’s long-term technical direction. Previous 3D printing experience is not required.
Requirements
- Experience building APIs, SDKs, or other developer-facing software.
- A strong foundation in software architecture, data structures, object-oriented software design, and cloud services.
- Enjoyment of ambiguous and technically challenging problems spanning multiple systems.
- Comfort working across system boundaries and debugging complex interactions between software components.
- Interest in the interaction between software and physical devices.
- A user-focused approach and motivation to build software that makes a real difference for its users.
- Ownership, a bias toward action, and comfort making decisions and moving work forward.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and technical teams across different disciplines.
Nice To Haves
- Experience designing or working with APIs using REST, gRPC, OpenAPI, or AsyncAPI.
- Experience with messaging systems such as NATS or MQTT.
- Experience writing C++ code, including through academic or personal projects or production software.
- Experience with MES or industrial automation.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, or cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with embedded systems or networking.
- Experience building AI-powered applications.
- Experience with 3D graphics, computational geometry, robotics, or simulation.
Responsibilities
- Design and build production APIs and SDKs for interacting with Formlabs software, printers, and manufacturing workflows.
- Build reliable automation systems that enable customers to integrate print preparation and Formlabs printers into their software and workflows.
- Ship value-generating customer features by building and evolving reliable, easy-to-use APIs.
- Work with Product Management teams and external developers to solve complex problems and shape the long-term technical direction.
