Senior Software Engineer

Science is seeking an experienced web engineer to join their team in Alameda, CA to help build out a software platform that will be used across the company. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in both frontend and backend engineering, as well as the ability to act as their own product manager. They should also have a sense of when to address technical debt and when to focus on building new features. The role requires the ability to quickly ship projects in a startup environment with little oversight. Experience with Rails, React, Typescript, and PostgreSQL is preferred. The base salary range for this position is $100,000-$180,000 annually, plus equity and benefits.

• Develop a software platform that will touch every part of the company, from collecting neural data to tracking devices through assembly to streamlining purchasing
• Collaborate closely with a world-class team of scientists and engineers
• Work with microfabrication, biology, animal behavior, surgery, and ops teams to build tools that they will use every day
• Demonstrate great communication skills
• Possess technical and product judgment
• Act as your own product manager and track down the next project that will be most immediately useful for the least coding effort
• Have a strong sense of when it's appropriate to address mounting technical debt and when to keep building new features
• Ship quickly with little oversight in a chaotic startup environment
• Have experience with Rails, React, Typescript, and PostgreSQL (preferred)
• Have experience with app deployment/devops (preferred)
• Possess a healthy distrust of the cloud (preferred)

• 5+ years of experience as a web software engineer, with expertise in both frontend and backend engineering
• Ability to act as a product manager and identify the most immediately useful projects with minimal coding effort
• Strong sense of when to address technical debt and when to prioritize building new features
• Demonstrated ability to quickly ship products with little oversight in a startup environment
• Experience with Rails, React, Typescript, and PostgreSQL is preferred
• Familiarity with app deployment and devops
