Senior Scientist, Protein Sciences

Systimmune•Bothell, WA
•$110,000 - $130,000

About The Position

SystImmune is seeking a Senior Scientist to join its Antigen Science team. The scientist will contribute to antigen strategy and membrane protein work supporting target discovery, assessment, validation, and tractability. This role provides technical leadership in producing and characterizing challenging membrane protein targets, including G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and translating biological hypotheses into well-behaved, functionally relevant reagents for therapeutic discovery programs. The position involves designing and executing antigen strategies, engineering membrane protein antigens and alternative antigen formats, and developing purification and quality-control workflows. The scientist will work closely with antibody discovery, antibody engineering, and assay development colleagues, and will document and communicate findings through technical reports, publications, patents, and presentations. SystImmune is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing cancer treatments, including bispecific and multispecific antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates. The company offers a comprehensive benefits package and describes opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to its success.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of industry experience in protein science, biologics discovery, or a closely related area.
  • Demonstrated expertise in membrane protein expression, purification, and stabilization.
  • Hands-on experience with alternative antigen formats, including nanodiscs, liposomes, and other detergent-free systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of protein biophysics and analytical techniques for characterizing antigen folding, stability, and homogeneity.
  • Familiarity with target validation and tractability assessment in a drug discovery or biologics context.
  • Ability to independently design experiments, troubleshoot complex problems, and deliver results on program timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of cross-functional collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting antibody discovery campaigns using membrane protein antigens.
  • Experience with GPCR pharmacology, signaling assays, or conformational-state characterization.
  • Experience characterizing protein quality and conformational integrity using biophysical and biochemical methods such as SEC-MALS, DSF, SPR/BLI, mass photometry, and circular dichroism.
  • Publication record in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to discovery, assessment, and validation of membrane protein targets, particularly GPCRs, including assessing target tractability from a protein science perspective.
  • Design and execute antigen strategies, including construct design, protein purification, and format selection, to support binder generation and functional data collection.
  • Engineer membrane protein antigens and alternative formats, such as nanodiscs, liposomes, stabilized conformations, and cell-based presentation.
  • Design and implement purification and quality-control workflows for detergent-solubilized and alternative antigen formats, ensuring high purity, protein integrity, and native-like conformation.
  • Partner with antibody discovery, antibody engineering, and assay development colleagues to align antigen design with program goals.
  • Author technical reports, contribute to scientific publications and patents, and present findings to cross-functional teams and leadership.

Benefits

  • 100% paid employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Short-term disability insurance.
  • Long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with a 50% company match of up to 3%, with a 5-year vesting schedule.
  • 15 PTO days per year.
  • Sick leave.
  • 11 paid holidays.
