Scientist, Protein Sciences

Systimmune•Bothell, WA
•$90,000 - $115,000

About The Position

SystImmune is seeking a Scientist to join its Antigen Science team. The role owns the production and characterization of membrane protein antigens supporting therapeutic discovery programs. The Scientist independently designs and runs experiments, makes technical decisions, and delivers well-characterized reagents on program timelines. The work includes challenging membrane targets such as GPCRs and other multi-pass proteins, requiring independent scientific judgment to address expression, purification, and reconstitution challenges.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • 0–3 years of industry or postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, from experimental design through analysis and reporting.
  • Experience with mammalian or insect cell expression systems.
  • Hands-on experience in membrane protein purification, such as GPCRs, ion channels, or transporters.
  • Familiarity with reconstitution approaches such as nanodiscs, liposomes, or detergent-free systems.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative approach to cross-functional work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with mass photometry, SEC-MALS, BLI, SPR, or circular dichroism.
  • Experience with antibody discovery or immunization workflows.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design, execute, and troubleshoot expression and purification workflows for membrane protein constructs.
  • Engineer and optimize membrane protein antigen constructs to improve expression and stability, selecting formats appropriate to downstream applications.
  • Develop and refine detergent, lipid, and buffer conditions to maintain membrane protein integrity through purification and storage.
  • Prepare and characterize alternative antigen formats, including nanodiscs, liposomes, and other detergent-free systems.
  • Establish and execute quality control for each antigen batch, including purity, identity, homogeneity, and conformational integrity.
  • Partner with antibody discovery, engineering, and assay development colleagues to understand reagent needs and deliver accordingly.
  • Present results to the team and cross-functional partners, and contribute to technical reports, publications, and patent applications.

Benefits

  • 100% paid employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Short-term disability insurance.
  • Long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with a 50% company match of up to 3%, with a five-year vesting schedule.
