About The Position

CBC News is looking for a talented journalist, exceptional leader and subject matter expert who can run our Health, Climate and Science teams. As senior producer, you will guide a team of multi-platform journalists tackling complex and pressing issues. You are passionate about finding and telling stories within these beats that audiences will relate and respond to. Strong news judgement is key: You're tapped into the latest health and wellness trends, can engage people on climate coverage, and have a passion for telling stories about science, space and technology. You are ready to jump on breaking news and tackle the stories people are talking about. You also embrace original and enterprise stories and foster an environment that encourages reporters and producers to pitch ideas. You inspire teams to cover these stories in a way that gives the audience the news they crave, whether it’s explaining why something works or debunking unfounded claims. This is a digital-first role. You're as comfortable assigning a TikTok video as you are a text story for the website. You know when to have your teams go live and when they should focus on content that is more evergreen. You have experience dealing with complicated health, climate and science stories and a firm grasp of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices. You will be required to critically evaluate emerging research and studies. You have subject matter knowledge of the beats and a roster of sources and connections. You are an inclusive leader. You bring an understanding of how important diversity of perspective is to our journalism and you think of stories that will resonate with different communities across Canada.

Requirements

Minimum 7 years of relevant experience and recognized journalistic and leadership credentials.
Exceptional leadership skills and organizational ability.
Strong understanding of health, science and climate change subject areas.
Cultural sensitivity and awareness.
Lived experience that broadens journalistic perspectives, with experience pursuing stories in under-represented communities.
Firm grasp of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Ability to recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.
Skill in generating and focusing ideas for original stories and overseeing original journalism.
Outstanding communication and collaboration skills; ability to work co-operatively with team members and supervisors in high pressure situations.
Solid technical grasp of broadcast and online production tools and methods.
Ability to work long hours as required.
This position requires a university degree or equivalent.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
A mandatory Criminal record check.
Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

Assign a team of multi-platform journalists to daily news and enterprise stories in video, text and audio.
Have a strong grasp of the priority stories in health, climate and science every day and map out coverage plans accordingly.
Align the team’s assignments and priorities with the CBC News content strategy, which is to be live when the audience needs us and on demand when it wants us
Propose coverage plans and advocate for coverage in daily assignment meetings.
Guide reporting teams and show/platform producers with your expertise in the subject matter of your beats.
Prioritize news stories that reflect Canada’s geographic, racial, cultural and socio-economic diversity.
Work collaboratively with assignment and program and platform leaders across CBC News.
Develop and maintain contacts with a wide variety of sources.
Give regular feedback to reporting teams about their stories, writing and performance.
