About The Position

CBC Toronto is looking for a producer to join our radio current affairs teams, working for our top-rated morning program, Metro Morning. We are seeking a natural leader and consummate team player with superb journalistic, programming and people skills. Working closely with the Senior Producer and the host of the show, you implement the vision for the program and ensure we are effectively and efficiently covering the stories and issues affecting the people in the GTA. You are a leader on the program, able to backfill as Senior Producer. You make independent editorial decisions and go over and above to close communication gaps with team members and editorial stakeholders, so Metro Morning is set up to succeed the second it goes to air. Advice and guidance are available, but there is considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. You will also play a role in developing and supporting content for CBC News digital platforms including a weekly podcast, social media, live story pages and CBC News Toronto’s live streaming channel. This is a permanent full time on-site position.

Requirements

  • Track record of generating original and innovative material.
  • A demonstrated commitment to reflecting community and a diversity of perspectives, experiences and backgrounds.
  • Strong news judgement with an awareness of contemporary political, economic, cultural and social issues of importance to the GTA.
  • Demonstrated talent as a radio writer and programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Excellent sound gathering skills.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills, and the desire to provide feedback that is direct and kind.
  • Exceptional editorial judgement, knowledge and understanding of CBC/Radio-Canada's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • An ability to work effectively under pressure and deadlines.
  • An understanding of CBC Toronto’s news priorities and Metro Morning’s programming goals.
  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Five years’ related experience.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends.
  • This position requires you to work in the CBC Toronto office full-time.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Propose original story ideas, chase breaking news, develop program content and segments, interview guests, do research, prepare and vet scripts and line up the show.
  • Help craft a programming plan, ensuring it reflects the latest information, provides context, and is factually correct.
  • Vet colleagues and columnists, which occasionally may lead to challenging conversations.
  • Lead the production - including conceptualizing of and chasing, writing and vetting for - Metro Morning’s podcast, This is Toronto.
  • Work in coordination with other staff to bring content to other platforms as required, furthering the goals of CBC as a content company.
  • Gather sound, voices in the field to produce content for segments and/or programs.
  • Respond to breaking news and pivot teams and programming quickly.
  • Conceive and produce special programming including breaking news specials and remote broadcasts.
  • Train and mentor junior members of the team.
