About The Position

CBC is opening a new station in Peel region and is seeking an experienced video producer to connect audiences with news, stories, and issues relevant to their communities. The successful candidate will be an innovative visual storyteller, bringing original ideas and treatments to their work, with a strong understanding of digital, social, and streaming platforms, and demonstrated skills in creating compelling video journalism. This role involves developing visual story content both independently and collaboratively, overseeing the entire production process from planning to distribution. The producer must be adept at quickly covering live, breaking news and crafting community-driven stories for social audiences. Essential skills include excellent communication, interpersonal abilities, multitasking, and technical troubleshooting. The position emphasizes audience-centric journalism, ensuring a broad range of perspectives, especially from underrepresented groups, are highlighted. The producer will actively expand their network of contacts and uphold all CBC journalistic standards for fairness, balance, accuracy, thoughtfulness, and immediacy.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories that meet the needs of our audiences.
  • Superior shooting and editing skills, and demonstrated experience producing innovative visual content for multiple platforms (digital, social, television), including both horizontal and vertical formats.
  • Understanding of visual gathering, visual production, and post-production methods.
  • Superior level of technical knowledge with a variety of cameras, broadcast equipment and non-linear editing platforms, including strong troubleshooting and technical skills related to live video transmission.
  • Understanding of production requirements for audio, video and lighting.
  • Strong sense of creativity, initiative, and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.
  • Knowledge of emerging storytelling formats and willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms.
  • Ability to work independently with superior problem-solving skills.
  • An unwavering focus on serving the needs of the audience and a passion for local news.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • University degree plus five years of relevant experience; or graduation from college plus seven years of practical and relevant experience; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • English (Reading - C - Advanced), English (Speaking - C - Advanced), English (Writing - C - Advanced).
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

Responsibilities

  • Shoot, edit, package and distribute video stories that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Determine the visual style, pace, tempo, and format of stories according to platform requirements and audience needs.
  • Prepare, set up, and operate small format, cinema, and traditional broadcast cameras and ancillary equipment, ensuring optimal visual, audio, and technical quality under prevailing conditions for multiple platforms and deadlines.
  • File from the field using a variety of technologies including Dejero, iPhone, etc.
  • Research internal archives and source user-generated content to effectively support and shape compelling visual stories.
  • Help with development of new production methods using contemporary storytelling trends, tools and techniques, to continually improve CBC’s content and best practices.
  • Contribute to creating and curating lineups for video platforms.
  • Provide technical guidance, expertise and support, focused on content production techniques and workflows.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of contacts and community members and participate in community engagement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to develop and break stories, plan and produce features, and coordinate long-term coverage.
