About The Position

CBC is opening a new station in Peel region and is seeking an experienced editorial leader and dynamic on-air presenter to serve as a Host. This role involves connecting audiences to news, stories, and issues relevant to their communities. The Host will be an active contributor to video journalism, writing and hosting daily news headline packages for digital, social, and streaming platforms, creating and producing video stories and interviews, and reporting live news from both the newsroom and the field. The ideal candidate is comfortable reacting to breaking news, adapting to changing events, and exploring new video treatments. They should be a curious storyteller with a passion for drawing out information and emotions, possessing an eclectic range of interests, and comfortable engaging with diverse individuals. The Host will initiate outreach to community members, champion stories from under-represented communities, and ensure all journalistic standards are met. This position plays a key role in growing audiences through public appearances and contributions to CBC programming across platforms. This position will generally be scheduled Monday through Friday, but flexibility to work other shifts times and days will be required. This role requires full-time, on-site presence.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily multiplatform news environment.
  • An engaging, curious, and spontaneous on-air personality, with a wide range of interests, knowledge and insight.
  • Knowledge of and an interest in emerging storytelling formats and a willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms.
  • Strong journalistic skills, demonstrated through original story ideas, live interviewing, innovative storytelling, and writing and vetting abilities.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to react quickly to changing circumstances and breaking news; comfortable going off-script when needed.
  • An unwavering focus on serving the needs of the audience and a passion for local news.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong shooting, editing and video storytelling skills, and experience producing innovative visual content for multiple platforms (digital, social, streaming, television)
  • A passion for community outreach and engagement.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities in Peel region, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • University degree or equivalent in a related field, with a minimum of five years of relevant or comparable experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of other languages, particularly Punjabi, would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Write and host daily news headline packages for streaming, social and digital platforms
  • Pitch and produce original stories that deepen CBC Peel’s community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Conduct research and interviews, shoot and edit video, write scripts, and package and present content.
  • Report live and breaking news on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Perform off script and be comfortable ad-libbing the latest details seamlessly into reporting, especially where information is sometimes scant or changing frequently.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Demonstrate effective and creative storytelling treatments and presentation.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts to enhance understanding of the region and its issues.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop stories and coordinate long-term coverage.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote CBC in the Peel region, with a focus on growing audiences, building connections and creating content that reflects community input.
  • Host and appear on other programming across platforms as needed.
