About The Position

CBC Northwest Territories (NWT) is looking for an experienced journalist to work alongside our morning assignment producer to co-ordinate a team of reporters that brings our audiences breaking news, information and insight across CBC North’s various programs and platforms, including radio news and current affairs, CBC Northbeat and cbc.ca/north. You’ll lead the late shift, from 1pm to 9:45 pm, taking primary responsibility for developing, editing and vetting stories. We are looking for someone who is a strong coach and mentor, as well as someone who is detail-oriented and confident in making decisions. You’ll also need sound journalistic and critical judgment, initiative and creativity, and a strong knowledge of the NWT’s news and current affairs and Indigenous communities. You will have the opportunity to initiate ideas, and produce stories and projects. There will be latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity and a requirement to adhere to CBC journalistic and program policies, standards and practices. You will work with an editorial leadership team led by the NWT’s executive producer.

Requirements

  • An aptitude for multiplatform story rollout with advanced knowledge of video, audio and digital production.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating a team or unit.
  • Demonstrated coaching, mentoring and vetting skills.
  • Superior editorial skills and judgment and demonstrated knowledge of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.
  • Strong interest in video.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Highly developed organizational skills; ability to multi-task and manage multiple demands and deadlines.
  • A valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada’s insurance company.
  • University degree or equivalent preferred.
  • At least five years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of a language Indigenous to the NWT would be considered a major asset.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Stay on top of local and regional news and current affairs from a variety of sources and also assist in mapping out and scheduling coverage.
  • Vet and edit broadcast copy, stories and text written by others.
  • Respond to and help lead breaking news coverage.
  • Regularly conceive and develop original and relevant story ideas.
  • Mentor and coach reporters through regular, constructive feedback and follow up.
  • Work with other producers to help plan, assign and co-ordinate preparation of radio newscasts, video news stories and digital stories.
  • Research, gather, write and/or edit stories and support others in the same tasks.
  • Plan and participate in longer term projects that support the objectives of the NWT station as established by the executive producer.
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues in other locations regarding NWT local stories that could be relevant in other regions and across CBC network programming.
  • Cultivate new sources to help better represent people, communities and perspectives in the NWT.
  • Build relationships with our audiences.
