About The Position

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Producer – Assignment (English Services) to join their CBC North - Iqaluit’s news development team. This is a full-time permanent position based in Iqaluit. The ideal candidate is known for their creative storytelling skills, journalistic rigor, and ability to lead and develop teams. The role involves assigning, developing, and vetting content for both TV and radio, communicating story expectations, and managing content in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The producer will support daily radio and TV programming, acting as an experienced and strong editorial leader who champions innovation and audience-focused journalism. A deep understanding of communities in Nunavut Nunangat and Inuit way of life is important, as is a passion for original or under-reported stories. The role requires a motivator, mentor, and coach capable of developing young journalists, with a focus on Inuktitut language programming. Collaboration, compassion, empathy, and calmness under pressure are key attributes. Adherence to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is required. Fluency in Inuktitut is considered an asset.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from university or college, plus 5 years of practical and relevant experience in journalism, including interviewing and writing for broadcast.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team or unit.
  • Demonstrated experience in video story development across a range of formats.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing feedback.
  • Demonstrated experience with journalism ethics, vetting & fact checking the work of others and identifying legal implications of journalism.
  • A keen interest and ongoing expertise in news and current events.
  • An ability to work effectively to multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An ability to work overtime as required.
  • A strong sense of creativity, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work.
  • Innovative with programming and ideas.
  • Curiosity, critical thinking and an ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment and under tight, daily deadlines.
  • Ability to re-imagine daily news - including tone, format, story choice and visual elements.

Responsibilities

  • Assigning, developing, and vetting content for both TV and radio from reporters.

  • Allocating resources for video and other platforms with assigning producers.
  • Managing the story development process and scheduling.
  • Refining focus, angles, and structure with the host.
  • Helping develop pitching and story creation skills of VJs, reporters, and videographers.
  • Writing, vetting, editing, and reviewing scripts, stories, and question lines.
  • Supporting the host for best delivery and performance.
  • Communicating with producers across platforms.
  • Anticipating the needs and direction of the program and streaming channel.
  • Determining the look, feel, style, pace, lineup, and format of the program.
  • Guiding and supporting staff through change.
  • Supporting team development and ongoing staff feedback.
  • Having daily responsibility for the journalism on the program and streaming channel.
  • Developing program, online, and social media content, including writing, researching, and/or editing text, graphics, and video.
  • Solving problems quickly, independently, and in group discussions while upholding an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Directing the work of others.
