About The Position

Manages teams delivering scalable distributed systems and components on a 2–4 quarter horizon. Standardizes engineering practices and scalability requirements across teams; oversees optimization for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads; and ensures effective use of distributed state tools and data plane platforms. Guides teams in designing fault-tolerant, in-service-upgradable systems, setting SLO-aligned durability and availability targets, and implementing resiliency mechanisms such as load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting. The role provides oversight for KPIs, telemetry, and moderately complex dashboards; directs the design of functional and correctness requirements, fault-injection tests, and replication and synchronization strategies. It ensures proactive incident management, operational readiness, and on-call coverage; drives encryption and access-control practices, remediation plans, and compliance documentation; and oversees automation and Infrastructure as Code development and maintenance. The manager partners with teams on change-management plans for safe patching, updates, and rollbacks. The role also manages multiple medium- to large-scale initiatives across teams, sets priorities aligned with business needs, fosters cross-functional partnerships, and provides direction on complex technical and operational issues. It promotes continuous learning and process improvement, coaches team members, supports career development, and leads talent acquisition activities such as candidate interviews and talent planning.

Responsibilities

  • Manage development and implementation of scalable distributed systems and components across multiple teams, including effective use of distributed state management tools.
  • Oversee optimization for large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads, and ensure scalability requirements are defined and met.
  • Manage use of data plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing; ensure teams design performance and load testing accurately.
  • Guide fault-tolerant system design, including redundancy, replication, automatic failover, and the ability to withstand in-service updates.
  • Develop strategies for handling service disruptions and network partitions, and lead approaches to network unreliability such as load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting.
  • Guide teams in designing durable systems that meet SLOs and set availability and durability expectations for departmental computing services.
  • Oversee definition of KPIs and telemetry and the development of dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting to monitor system health.
  • Oversee design and implementation of functional and correctness requirements, complex fault-injection and brown-out testing, and data replication and synchronization strategies.
  • Guide proactive diagnosis, debugging, and resolution of operational issues and help prevent customer-impacting interruptions or maintenance windows.
  • Oversee operational readiness and approve operational support rotation schedules.
  • Oversee security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls; direct remediation of security gaps and ensure infrastructure compliance documentation.
  • Oversee automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, and partner with teams on change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications.
  • Manage multiple medium- to large-scale projects or initiatives across teams, monitoring timelines, deliverables, and applicable budgets; set priorities and guide plan adjustments.
  • Drive cross-functional partnerships and coach team members in building strategic relationships with business leaders, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Provide direction on complex technical and operational issues and review critical or unresolved issues to help identify solutions.
  • Model continuous learning, use feedback to improve team skills, identify skill gaps, and enable learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of processes, protocols, and workflows across teams.
  • Provide performance feedback and coaching, discuss development goals, support career development, and align individual goals with organizational goals.
  • Develop and manage the talent acquisition pipeline, lead candidate interviews, monitor promotion eligibility, and/or orchestrate talent resources.
