About The Position

The Senior Manager, Core Infrastructure Engineering manages teams delivering scalable distributed systems and components on a 2–4 quarter horizon. The role standardizes engineering practices and scalability requirements across teams, oversees optimization for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads, and ensures effective use of distributed state tools and data plane platforms. It guides teams in designing fault-tolerant, in-service-upgradable systems, setting SLO-aligned durability and availability targets, and implementing resiliency mechanisms such as load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting. The role provides oversight for KPIs, telemetry, moderately complex dashboards, functional and correctness requirements, fault-injection testing, and replication and synchronization strategies. It ensures proactive incident management, operational readiness, and on-call coverage; drives encryption and access-control practices, remediation plans, and compliance documentation; and oversees automation and Infrastructure as Code. It also partners with teams on change-management plans for safe patching, updates, and rollbacks. The manager oversees multiple medium- to large-scale cross-team initiatives, aligns priorities with business needs, drives cross-functional partnerships, addresses complex technical and operational problems, and supports continuous learning and process improvement. Responsibilities include coaching and performance management, career development, interviewing, and managing talent resources.

Responsibilities

  • Manage development and implementation of scalable distributed systems and components across multiple teams, including effective use of distributed state management tools.
  • Oversee code and system optimization for large-scale data processing and high-throughput requirements to support hyper-scale systems.
  • Guide teams in defining scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation requirements are met.
  • Manage use of data plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Ensure teams accurately design performance and load testing.
  • Manage strategies for fault-tolerant components and systems that can withstand in-service updates, including redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Develop strategies for handling service disruptions, including decisions involving consistency, availability, and partition tolerance.
  • Lead cross-team implementation and optimization of approaches to network unreliability, including load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting.
  • Guide teams in designing durable systems that meet SLOs and set availability and durability expectations for other departmental computing services.
  • Oversee definition of KPIs and telemetry to identify gaps or issues in running systems.
  • Oversee development and customization of moderately complex dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms for proactive monitoring.
  • Oversee design and implementation of functional and correctness requirements for features and systems.
  • Guide teams in designing complex test scenarios, including fault-injection and brown-out tests.
  • Direct implementation strategies for data replication and synchronization to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Guide teams in proactively diagnosing, debugging, and resolving issues in active components and systems.
  • Ensure teams prevent service interruptions and resolve issues without requiring customer or user maintenance windows.
  • Oversee operational readiness protocols and ensure teams understand their owned components and systems.
  • Oversee and approve operational support rotation schedules.
  • Oversee security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls.
  • Direct execution of remediation plans for identified security gaps.
  • Ensure comprehensive documentation and cloud infrastructure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, for cloud infrastructure.
  • Work with teams on change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications, and guide development of components that enable automation of these processes.
  • Manage multiple medium- to large-scale projects or initiatives across teams, monitoring timelines, deliverables, and budgets when applicable.
  • Set team priorities and align project work with business needs; guide adjustments to plans when resources or timelines change.
  • Drive cross-functional partnerships and coach team members in building relationships with business leaders, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Promote inclusivity by seeking and listening to diverse perspectives.
  • Direct teams in addressing complex operational and technical issues and analyzing complex data to identify solutions.
  • Review unresolved or critical issues and help teams identify potential solutions.
  • Model continuous learning, use feedback to improve skills, identify team skill gaps, and enable learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive collaboration and implementation of improvements to processes, protocols, and workflows, and encourage alternative approaches and feedback.
  • Provide performance feedback and coaching, discuss development goals, and align individual goals with organizational goals.
  • Develop and manage the talent acquisition pipeline, including candidate interviews, promotion eligibility monitoring, and talent resource coordination.
