The technician is expected to provide advanced diagnostics and repairs, support field teams, mentor junior technicians, and promote continuous improvement and consistent repair standards. The position involves work across high-voltage and low-voltage systems, vehicle networks, chassis and drivability systems, thermal management and HVAC, and ADAS and body/glass integration. It also includes parts operations, repair-quality verification, technical documentation, root-cause analysis, and feedback to field service engineers and leadership. The role requires a standard 40-hour workweek, with availability for weekends, holidays, and early morning, evening, or overnight shifts as needed.

  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record, with no suspensions or revocations within the past 3–5 years.
  • Ability to work a standard 40-hour week, including weekends, holidays, early morning, evening, or overnight shifts as required.
  • Ability to travel to regional locations or production plants as needed.
  • Proficiency in Windows or Mac environments, work order management systems, and specialized engineering or diagnostic documentation systems.
  • Physical capability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • State mechanic certifications where required by jurisdiction; examples for Michigan include front end, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC.
  • 3 to 8+ years of hands-on experience working on vehicle high-voltage systems and high-voltage diagnostic work.
  • Advanced knowledge of automotive electronics, CAN and LIN bus communication, electrical schematics, and wiring harness repair.
  • Knowledge of chassis service, including alignments and braking systems, and diagnosis of ABS, traction control, power steering, and NVH concerns.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, coolant drain/fill operations, A/C machine usage, 609 refrigerant certification, and complex thermal management diagnosis.
  • Proficiency in ADAS calibration and replacing or adjusting sensors, body panels, and glass to manufacturer tolerances.
  • Ability to diagnose complex high-voltage faults and isolation issues, with understanding of high-voltage architecture, HVIL, charging isolation, and safety power-down protocols using appropriate PPE.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited automotive repair school or vocational program.
  • Ability to drive a non-commercial truck and trailer.
  • 5 to 8+ years of automotive repair experience, with extensive bumper-to-bumper diagnostic experience.
  • Experience in leadership or supervisory roles, such as Shop Foreman, Team Lead, or Technical Mentor.
  • Demonstrated background in continuous improvement, process standardization, and escalation management.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bumper-to-bumper diagnostics, complex repairs, installations, and inspections at service centers and in field settings, including customer sites, mobile routes, or remote locations.
  • Provide high-level diagnostic guidance to field service teams and conduct remote diagnostics or repairs when issues can be safely addressed without local vehicle access, using logged vehicle data and technical schematics.
  • Coach, mentor, and train junior technicians and internal partners; foster cross-functional collaboration and lead shop-floor technical problem-solving.
  • Use specialized diagnostic tools to resolve complex electrical, high-voltage, and network faults.
  • Conduct road tests to verify repair quality, champion continuous improvement, and promote high standards across repair workflows.
  • Oversee complex parts operations, including ordering, receiving, inventory management, and billing.
