About The Position

Trail of Bits is seeking a Developer Relations Engineer to amplify its public work and deepen relationships with the security practitioner, researcher, maintainer, and open-source communities. This role is dedicated to advocating for the company's published research and tools, extending their reach, and facilitating their adoption by the community. The engineer will work closely with engineering, marketing, and technical editing teams, acting as a bridge between the company's internal work and the external community. The role involves attending and speaking at conferences, supporting open-source projects, creating educational content, and providing feedback to internal teams based on community interactions. This position does not involve quotas or account management.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with software that people use (tools, libraries, integrations, skills, or agents).
  • Ability to read unfamiliar code, run analyzers against it, and submit merged pull requests.
  • Deep, hands-on security experience (typically seven or more years), sufficient to engage with researchers and engineers.
  • Published research, CVEs, and advisories are considered valuable experience.
  • Practical experience building with agentic tooling (skills, agents, MCP servers, harnesses, evals).
  • A public body of work demonstrating contributions through talks, posts, upstream contributions, research, and documentation.
  • Understanding of how security communities operate, where they gather, and the ability to gain trust.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills capable of engaging a skeptical audience.
  • Ability to take ownership under ambiguity, decide what matters, and defend those choices.
  • Willingness to travel approximately a quarter of the year.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining or contributing meaningfully to an open-source project.
  • Depth in application security, blockchain and cryptography, AI/ML security, or low-level systems research.
  • Experience running or programming a community venue at scale.
  • Contributions to developer documentation.
  • Involvement with open-source foundations, grant programs, or maintainer-facing initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Grow and establish relationships across the security community.
  • Attend and speak at conferences and cybersecurity meetups.
  • Support open-source projects and maintainers through technical office hours and upstream contributions.
  • Transform research and releases into practitioner-focused content like advisories, write-ups, and guidance.
  • Optimize tools, skills, and plugins for adoption.
  • Teach methods through workshops and hands-on sessions.
  • Publish technical content under your own name, including deep dives and tutorials.
  • Accelerate the conference and CFP (Call for Papers) process by identifying opportunities and assisting engineers with submissions and preparation.
  • Use and evaluate the company's published work against unfamiliar code, providing direct feedback to development teams.
  • Improve the adoption of company work by shipping examples, integrations, and enhancing project front doors (onboarding, documentation).
  • Attract external contributors to Trail of Bits' projects.
  • Route community feedback, insights on practitioner struggles, desired tools, research gaps, and emerging ecosystems back into the firm.
