Senior AI Builder

About The Position

Artera is hiring a Senior AI Builder to create agentic systems that support patient-facing healthcare workflows, including scheduling, referral coordination, medication refills, billing, and payment estimation. The role is embedded in a customer-facing squad and owns work end to end, from customer discovery and problem framing through design, development, production operation, customer onboarding, and ongoing enhancements for a named subset of provider customers. The Senior AI Builder independently owns customer outcomes, combining product-management curiosity, project-management discipline, and engineering fluency. The role develops subject-matter expertise and long-term relationships with senior healthcare executives, contributes to reusable agent patterns and evaluation tools, and mentors newer builders. It also includes operating deployed systems, participating in on-call for owned surfaces, investigating incidents, and improving reliability. This position supports a federal-facing product and involves secure access, incident response, operational continuity, government background-check eligibility, and compliance with organizational security policies and federal data-protection standards.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in software engineering, data science, machine learning, product management, product design, or technical project management, or equivalent demonstrated output.
  • Experience owning technical decisions across a portfolio of customers rather than a single solution at a time.
  • Ability to design solution architecture before writing code.
  • Track record of shipping end-to-end solutions that operate reliably in production and delivering subsequent enhancements.
  • Ability to ask why before how, scope and sequence work, communicate status, and deliver work.
  • Ability to factor business needs, operating costs, and industry trends into technical tradeoff decisions.
  • Ability to learn from unsuccessful approaches and change course based on what is learned.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise the engineering bar by reviewing work, mentoring less experienced builders, and improving testing and evaluation practices.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States and able to provide proof of full-time, long-term work authorization; visa sponsorship and transfers are not available.
  • Must meet eligibility for a government background check and comply with organizational security policies and federal data-protection standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in healthcare technology, digital health, or patient-facing products.
  • Hands-on experience building production agentic systems, RAG pipelines, or MCP-based tool integrations.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, HITRUST, or FedRAMP compliance considerations.
  • Experience with EHR integrations such as Epic, athena, eClinicalWorks, or NextGen, or with call center/CCaaS integrations.
  • Experience writing evaluations and quality benchmarks for LLM-driven systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship agentic features that handle real patient conversations end to end, from problem framing through production operation.
  • Identify customer pain points and create a roadmap for solving them.
  • Define success criteria for solutions, build evaluation harnesses and test cases, and measure helpfulness and safety.
  • Build novel solutions for named customers by translating operational needs into technical solutions and architecting and coding them with internal agentic systems.
  • Contribute reusable foundations, including shared agent patterns, evaluation tooling, and internal libraries.
  • Move quickly on reversible decisions and escalate other decisions with a proposed course of action.
  • Operate deployed solutions, participate in on-call for owned surfaces, investigate incidents to root cause, and eliminate recurring failure patterns.
  • Review others’ work, mentor less experienced builders, and improve team testing and evaluation practices.
  • Take ownership of problems within or adjacent to the role’s scope and follow them through to resolution.
  • Meet responsibilities related to secure access, incident response, and operational continuity; complete ongoing training and follow compliance requirements.
