About The Position

The Security Coordinator supervises Security Officers, providing work guidelines, shift assignments, and operational direction. This role is responsible for maintaining departmental personnel requirements, including staffing coverage, scheduling, hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, continuing education, proficiency testing, timekeeping, and employee development. The Security Coordinator ensures consistent application of departmental and Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) policies and procedures, and maintains oversight of access control systems, key control programs, and departmental equipment and assets. The position also involves serving on various safety and security committees, participating in emergency preparedness, and performing Security Officer responsibilities as needed to ensure adequate staffing and support hospital operations. This includes conducting patrols, responding to incidents, supporting ED and BHU operations, providing escorts, utilizing de-escalation techniques, monitoring utility systems, and completing reports. The role also involves investigations, providing security education, and collaborating with the Safety Director and Risk Manager. All activities must comply with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and JMH policies, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current Indiana Law Enforcement Officer Certification and have active “Arresting Powers” to enforce the laws of the state of Indiana.
  • At least five years of experience of law enforcement, healthcare security, corrections, military police, or related public safety experience required.
  • Must have a valid Indiana Driver’s License and the ability to meet Johnson Memorial Health’s vehicle insurance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Security Officers by providing work guidelines, shift assignments, and operational direction.
  • Maintains departmental personnel requirements including staffing coverage, scheduling, EDO observation assignments, hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, continuing education, proficiency testing, timekeeping, and employee development.
  • Ensures consistent application of departmental and Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) policies and procedures.
  • Maintains oversight of access control systems, key control programs, and departmental equipment and assets.
  • Serves on Safety, Environment of Care, Workplace Violence Prevention, Emergency Management, and related committees to provide leadership and support regarding safety and security initiatives.
  • Participates in Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) activities, emergency preparedness planning, drills, exercises, and response operations.
  • Performs Security Officer responsibilities as needed to maintain staffing coverage and support hospital operations, including but not limited to: conducting routine interior and exterior patrols, responding to security incidents, emergencies, alarms, and requests for assistance, supporting Emergency Department (ED) and Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) operations, providing visitor management, access control, and employee safety escorts, utilizing de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques during behavioral events, monitoring hospital utility systems and equipment including medical gases, boilers, fire alarm systems, and other critical infrastructure, monitoring weather conditions and snow accumulation and notifying appropriate departments of conditions affecting safety, completing reports and documentation related to incidents, investigations, and shift activities, providing assistance during helicopter landings, facility emergencies, and utility or system failures resulting in immediate safety concerns, identifying and investigating suspicious persons, vehicles, and unauthorized activities, conducting vehicle license verification checks when appropriate, assisting with emergency room patients and behavioral health patients as needed, and patrolling parking areas to provide a safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports operational data to evaluate performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Conducts security and workplace violence risk assessments, maintains required records, supports accreditation readiness, and prepares reports for leadership, committees, and regulatory agencies.
  • Conducts investigations involving thefts, workplace violence incidents, suspicious activity, unauthorized access, property loss, and other security-related concerns.
  • Prepares investigative reports and maintains documentation.
  • Conducts record checks and background investigations as authorized and directed by management.
  • Provides education and training sessions pertaining to security to JMH staff when requested.
  • Works closely with the Safety Director and Risk Manager to evaluate safety/security conditions and implement improvements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and Johnson Memorial Health policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.
