About The Position

Under general supervision, the Sanitation Operator performs unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s transfer station. This is an at-will temporary employment position.

The role includes preparing the transfer station for daily operation and closing, assisting patrons with procedures, monitoring waste and safety, processing vouchers and fees, maintaining records, cleaning the facility and equipment, and performing routine maintenance and minor repairs. The operator may also assist with snow removal, yard work, painting, janitorial duties, and other assigned related work.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent and one year of experience in sanitation or waste disposal that includes operating heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
• Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Must be prepared to begin work at the assigned location on the specified days and hours.

Responsibilities

• Open and close transfer station gates according to schedule; conduct daily safety inspections and prepare the facility for opening and closing.
• Supervise the separation of trash by patrons, explain transfer station procedures, and monitor and screen cargo to prevent disposal of prohibited materials and ensure safety procedures are followed.
• Inspect and collect appropriate dump vouchers, account for fees by checking vouchers, and file documents and vouchers received throughout the day.
• Complete forms, enter computer information, and maintain records of transfer station operations.
• Maintain the cleanliness and neatness of the transfer station facility.
• Assist with snow plowing and snow removal when required.
• Sanitize and clean equipment, tools, and work areas; perform routine maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• Inspect vehicle fluid levels and tire pressure and make adjustments as needed.
• Operate specialized equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and loaders.
• Perform painting, yard work, janitorial, and housekeeping duties as assigned.
• Perform related duties as assigned or required.
