About The Position

The RN Unit Supervisor is responsible for strong problem-solving abilities in complex situations, working within budget and productivity targets to meet organizational objectives. This role participates in and supports plans for staff selection, evaluation, orientation, continued education, competency evaluation, and scheduling based on patient acuity. The supervisor supports and partners with the Manager/Clinical Leader to ensure staff knowledge, skills, and behaviors align with unit goals. They possess outstanding relationship-building skills, including strong physician relationship skills, and are patient-focused with a commitment to quality, safety, and customer service. Accountability for achieving patient satisfaction targets (PressGaney and HCAHPS) and supporting process improvement in operations, quality, and organizational change are key. Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements is necessary. The role requires effective and persuasive communication, participation in hospital and department committees, and demonstrated ability in developing and mentoring staff. Leading by example with professional behavior, personal and professional accountability, and a passion for nursing are essential. The supervisor serves as a role model and coach for Critical Moments of Service Standards and service recovery, and participates in performance improvement activities, potentially including shared governance. Critical thinking regarding patient safety and experience, with appropriate escalation, is required. Support for the professional nurse continuum and nursing clinical ladder (CARE) is also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Licensed as an RN in state of practice.
  • Approved CPR certification required within 90 days.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities in complex situations.
  • Ability to work within the budget and productivity targets to meet organizational objectives.
  • Outstanding relationship building skills.
  • Must possess strong physician relationship skills.
  • Patient focused with a strong commitment to delivering the highest levels of quality, safety, and customer service.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards for their areas of responsibility.
  • Able to communicate effectively and persuasively with individuals and groups through compassion, creativity, and consistent visibility.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and mentoring staff and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates personal and professional accountability and holds others to the same.
  • Exhibits a passion for nursing.
  • May include color blind test (per department guidelines)

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Other certification per unit requirements: ACLS, PALS, PEARS, NRP

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes critical thinking in regards to patient safety and patient experience and appropriately escalates to the appropriate chain of command.
  • Supports the professional nurse continuum and nursing clinical ladder for RNs (CARE).
