The RN works on a 30-bed Medical Oncology Specialty Unit caring for patients age 18 and older. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 4–6 patients per RN. The unit cares for oncology, general medical, palliative, and end-of-life patients and uses inpatient chemotherapy and radiation skills. Department resources include Oncology Nursing Society education and support, active shared governance, and mentor/mentee programs for new graduates and nurses pursuing oncology certification. The RN completes admission assessments, develops and implements individualized plans of care, and continually evaluates and modifies those plans. The role includes documenting care, performing required patient-care procedures, supporting patients and families emotionally, and administering chemotherapy and biotherapy both on the oncology unit and elsewhere in the hospital. The RN also contributes to safety, communication, peer development, and ongoing learning while meeting departmental competency requirements.
