About The Position
Vetco Total Care Hospitals, a division of Petco, is seeking relief veterinarians to provide accessible, high-quality veterinary care. This independent contractor role offers flexible online booking, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts. Veterinarians select available weekday and weekend shifts, set their rate for each shift, and may continue other practice activities outside their Vetco shifts. There are no agency fees. The appointment-based model is designed to manage patient traffic and help shifts finish on time. Trained, experienced hospital staff handle operations so the veterinarian can focus on patient care and experience. Before shifts, the veterinarian partners with the area medical director to review case comfort levels. Relief shifts include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. There are no overnights or emergency on-call duties. Hospitals have digital patient records, a surgical suite, Butterfly IQ+ handheld ultrasound imaging, digital and dental X-ray, Vetology Radiograph Interpretation AI, and on-site labs. Licensed and trained hospital staff are available. The posting states that Illinois state bid rates average $135–$146 per hour; shift rates may vary by clinic location and selected shift duration.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
- State license in good standing.
- Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions.
- DEA registration in good standing.
- Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
- Comply with all local, state, and federal mandates.
Responsibilities
- Provide preventive veterinary care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures during relief shifts.
